It can be hard being out with youngsters at home, just make sure to keep in contact regular. Skype is great for that. I am a father of 4 with 5 on the way in September. My daughter (age 5) had the hardest time if all the kids. They don't understand, all they know is dad is away. My daughter still asks everytime I go out why I have to. (I'm home weekly Midwest regional)

I guess I'm the lucky one. My kids have always been used to me being away from home because of the Navy. Of course, they're older too. My daughter turns 17 next month and my son is 23. I will admit that I sure wish I had more time to spend with my grandson though.

Shot first off good luck!!!
Second tell joe and brian hello from me in PA. I had them for trainers. I'm the only one from my class still in Roehl. I was with them in july last year.
third... I know it can be rough with little ones. My son saved his first steps for me being home. Well that's what the wife told me. He was only 5 months old when I spent my 3 weeks at Marshfield. That stunk. Tho I got home 2 days early with the holiday. My daughter is 3 and she knows I'm gone but we talk as much as we can. I also don't go out more then the 11-14 days out. I do think its better for me to run otr now then go local later when they get older and have more memories. -
It is hard being away from your kids all the time... My youngest is will be sixteen in a couple of months, and he has really liked having me home all summer. As I get better over the next few weeks we are going to start working on a car for him to drive. We have an old 95 saturn sl1 that needs some tlc. I want to get it squared away before I head back out in September. My 17 year old daughter has been gone all summer, church camp, camp counselor, and working... As for my oldest, he is 22 and gone all the the time, he is talking about moving to Baltimore now. We all talk and text all the time, we do try to make the most out of home time. At least now you can at least talk daily, I remember talking to my dad about once a week when he would stop at a truck stop and call home. He would talk to mom almost every day. Now with cell phones and skype it is pretty easy to video chat... It is all in what we make of it, if we chose to be miserable being away, then that is how we feel, if we try to concentrate on the upside of things, it makes it all bearable.

I will definitely say hello for ya Hindsy! I agree with you with being otr while the kids are young. My son is 5 and my daughters are 2 and 11 months. I figure its best to be on the road now and look for something more local when they get a bit older.
Well day yesterday was the end of week one. Today we just go practice our pre-trip. I seem to be getting better each day. My shifts are getting smoother and smoother. I wish I could say that about my student co-driver. He is having a hard time with it. He kind of got told that if he doesn't start to get it he might be going home. We drove around Marshfield and he got almost two full hours and it didn't seem to be getting any better. I got about an hour and a quarter and I don't recall getting a word said to me which is what Joe said is a good thing. I really didn't miss a shift until we were turning on 29th st. We started talking football and I lost my concentration for a second. lol.
Oh well, got to get ready. I need to get me some coffee and get over to Roehl for pre-trip practice. I need to bring my own coffee because the school's is ahem a bit watery for me. LOL. I like it thick! lol.BusDriver Thanks this. -
Yeah the coffee is a bit weak, but after it sits there all day it gets better... Glad to hear you are doing good. As for your truckmate, they do send guys packing all the time that are not getting it. We have students that make it through school and get with trainers, but then stop making progress and get sent home. Keep up the good work, and you will be fine.
Shotsjc Thanks this. -
Well good to hear shot. Joe was mostly quiet with me too. We'd get to chatting and socializing. Then we'd have to stop when a certain other driver drove. Lol we only had 3 guys two of us got it and the 3rd ended up by himself with Brian or another trainer from week two on. He passed in the end, but I heard he bumped a couple trlrs and was let go. He works for the windy hill place down the road. Lol. The other bounced pretty quick too. But he at least passed too.
Claude still there? His speech ever change? Where's George? Lolroehl929 Thanks this. -
Honestly at one point joe had to pull the brakes in an intersection on the guy. Guy in the back with me looked at each other like, "you want to walk back?" Lol.

I have had students like that...

I really thought the other guy in my truck was going to flip us into a ditch. I started to brace myself in the back of the truck. I thought Joe was going to lose it. That is when the get better or ya might be going home line happened. I felt for him but in the same thought felt like he shouldnt be behind of the wheel. Hopefully for his sake he improves.
I went to do some laundry today and discovered Culvers Butterburgers. Omg that place is gooood! lol. I am on a pretty tight budget and have been making all of my meals in the room. Today I needed a burger. lol. I am so glad we dont havem in ny or I would weigh 400lbs! lol. Dam it was good. I needed that. Ill have to save myself until the next weekend.
Oh well, I am going to relax in the whirlpool for a bit and then read some of my homework and stuff.Last edited: Aug 20, 2011
