As a new driver is better to drive company for a few months before you take on a lease. Or should you jump into a lease

If you're talking about a lease-purchase from a carrier, never is the best time.

While there are a purchase option associated with leases at Prime (and a straight lease to purchase contract as well) - the kind of deal you're referring to isn't what is being discussed here.

I'd suggest you need to run company for a year or two for a number of reasons. First, being paid a percentage of the load as an independent contractor means that you must be able to minimize your costs in order to make a reasonable amount of money. For instance, you need to be able to pull 7.5 mpg out of one of our trucks on a consistant basis in order to make the fuel work.

Then there's routing... asking your GPS to make those decisions for you means you're not ready. The same goes with enough experience with the HOS rules that you can make these loads work legally.

Finally, learning the ropes at Prime also means studying the numbers long enough to determine if YOU can make it work in your individual situation, and accumulating enough cash to buffer the swings that the business puts on your settlements.

I am supposed to start with prime at end month sept. I have 10 months OTR. I have a friend who leases now who loves it since April. Also, I have an opportunity to do oil fields in north Dakota. My big thing is money and home time when I need it. I am a runner and not afraid of snow, but prefer none. What do you suggest?
Send me a PM if possible.
