Is it better to get your start locally as opposed to OTR. I'm getting my start local. Id like to give OTR a shot eventually. That could be a problem if a switch to an employer that doesn't have an OTR division. Should a newbie start OTR or local?
Good question

Most otr companies will not hire you if you have been a local driver and have not had any otr experience. Most local companies will not hire you if you don't have experience. Would you? Would you hire someone with a proven track record and experience to drive your expensive equipment or someone fresh out of school?
-
Most OTR companies give no value to local experience.
-
Plus why would you spend $6000 to go to school for a $10hr local gig?
If you are concerned about home time I recommend finding another career. Otherwise the numbers just don't add up.

Removed irrelevant post. Sorry I didn't pay better attention.

There is no need to keep posting that "cut & paste" in every single thread, especially when it is irrelevant to the question being asked.
From the sound of the post, he's already got a local gig lined up. There really isn't any reason for him NOT to take it if it is what he wants to do. If he's got plans to maybe someday in the future go out over the road, he may or may not run into problems. SOME carriers demand recent OTR experience. Others only require T/T experience. The carriers who only require T/T experience don't give a flip whether that experience was OTR, regional, or local...as long as you were driving equipment similar to what they have.Kahne, AXE, Mdbluecrab and 4 others Thank this. -
Who says it has to be a $10 hour local gig? I didnt see any numbers thrown around. If you have a good local job lined up then by all means go for it. Both segments have their up's and down'sLonesome Thanks this.

Who said it's $10.00 an hour? Every local job is $10.00 an hour? Even if it was, there are benefits on sleeping at home, not eating every meal on the road, etc. I run local, and love it! And it's about $50,000.00 a year, a "bit" more than $10.00 an hour.....
If you have a chance at local, I'd go for it! -
Lot of good $ local jobs just have to find them by banging on doors and asking all the local outfits if they have an opening.

Bingo. Got the gig, I've put in my time at the place
Guess its a good thing I'm at a place that has both local and OTR. Oh, no need for that huge post if you would've read the post.
