Yesterday the oil was changed, first change. Today around 600 miles later the oil is already BLACK on the dip stick.

My 96 CAT with far more miles on it than this truck would run about 6000 or 7000 miles before the oil on the dip stick turned as black as this truck was with only 600 miles. I AM NOT IMPRESSED!!!

Brickman, my Detoit will turn the oil black the second you start it up after an oil change. Detroit says it has to do with the piston rings being so high up on the piston. Must not hurt anything, the engine has 1.45 million, 455k on an in-frame. Runs strong and pulls good. They say I can stop the soot by installing a centrifuge. May do that unless I trade the truck.

I can lug my little 330 Mack down to 1100 before downshifting. It does best from 1100 to 1500.

Aside from the fact that it sounds like it's running underwater, I can't complain. It gets the job done.

Its hard to believe that all that soot in the oil does an engine any good.

I'd have a bypass filter on there in a heartbeat.

Uh... those are the new normal temps for these new engines. The new oil is made for those temps. Those temps have been around since the last emissions regs in '02. Also if you get 4-5 mpg that is a huge range and I wouldn't look at mpg until after 50K miles of break in with the newer engines. Make sure you get and the electronic parameters set the way you want them. Your dealer should be able to do that with you.
Regardless, Please make sure you get the right specs they both run very different and have different torque peaks and recommended rpm ranges for best performance or fuel economy or a balance. Use their websites and distributors to recommend the axles to use. I guarantee that a cat will have different gears than a cummins in the same apllication.

Here are the sites for cat and cummins to get the specs right. Don't assume 3.36 works in both or either. You can download the cummins program free and plug in to the truck to read faults and clear them, set parameters. You gotta buy an inline adaptor from the dealer though. Don't know if the Cat program downloads but you can find out or call them.

Replace all the commas with periods above. The site won't let me post active links.
