I'm looking to move from IL to wherever I can find the best work at the end of September, is there still work readily available in the ND oil patch that pays well? I have tanker, doubles/triples and hazmat on my CDL A, and 10 years of CDL experience. 2 years in a pneumatic tanker, 7 months in a flatbed OTR and 7 years in a concrete mixer. Also, I have the opportunity to bring my own equipment, what should I be looking out for? I'm fine driving company or O/O. Thanks for the advice.

Stayed overnight in Elgin, IL last April, nice town...anyways yes there is work driving truck available still in the oil patch. If you want right in the heart of it in Williston, you better have a place to stay lined up because you won't fine one. That's the biggest issue right now is a place to live. On the outskirts of it you can fine places but be ready to pay.
Lots of jobs easily paying $20/hr and I'm sure you start at least at $25/hr if not more with your experience. Be ready for ###### weather conditions come winter, ice, blizzards, whiteouts, -30F air temp sometimes with many days below 0 before wind chill. Not trying to scare you just telling you how it is.
Some places like to work 6 days on 3 days off or many different versions there of. I've never worked out there so I can't tell you what to watch for as far as companies. Although I have heard you may want to have in writing how often you will get paid. Had a friend who didn't get paid for like a month. -
i stay in washington state sleeping in my car for 5 months , but you have to have a good car if your re going to do the same in ND

I'm leaning towards buying my own truck and belly dump, seems like that is where there is the most demand and the best opportunity to make money. Any recommendations on what kind of truck and what type of belly dump is most popular out there? I have a lot of experience in Pete 379's and Mack's and Internationals, those would be the trucks I would be most comfortable with (not so much the Internationals, I don't have the same faith in them I do in the Pete's and Macks) . Would it be best to look towards a daycab or a sleeper? It seems to me my best chance at securing work would be to get my ducks in a row then just head out there for a couple of weeks and pound the pavement looking for work. I'm also leaning towards the belly dump option because if I find the ND oil patch is not for me (seems a lot of people find this as they are always looking for work), I can always find work for a belly dump. As for the trailer, I don't have experience with belly dumps so I'm not really sure what would be best here. I'm thinking for sure steel not aluminum, but otherwise I'm not sure what size they are using. Anyhow, thanks for all the advice!

not sure if last comment was lost or what...I'm new at this. I'm looking for an outfit to lease on a water truck with. I have 2,000,000 accident free miles as a heavy haul owner operator. Also have an oil field set-up truck w/winch and rolling tail stock. I live in RC,SD and have worked pipe lines in 35 below zero conditions. Anyone have any tips? How tuff a truck should I put together for water hauling or will a reg OTR truck hold up? I got out of trucking a year ago and am ready to get back in it.

AC22 lots of good info. Got any tips on putting together water truck for the ND oil patch? Heavy duty rears like 46,000 or maybe a double frame. I know how hard job sites can be on equipment after 30 years as heavy haul owner operator. I hear there are outfits that let you work 14 days off/on. If I can find someone to let me spend quality time at home in Rapid City I would lease on. I also have an old Western Star winch truck that could be put to work...
