I agree the rapid advances in technology have mostly eliminated the worry about spectrum loss for hams. Unless they do that broadband over power crap which will forever ruin my 80 and SW fun. I was a tech plus KB7SEZ and went for my extra after deciding I wanted to play with 1296 EME. I had a box full of 2C39's with cavities and an old late 50's ARRL handbook with a great project in it I had always wanted to try. There was a group in Mt that kept hassling me that my call could not be extra so I finally changed it so they would shut up. Few years later they could have looked online but this was in the days of year old CD's being what they used to verify. I regret that more than anything I liked my KB7 call and should have never changed it.

The old 2c39 trick
I ran a APX-6 on 1296 back in the late 60's it used several 2c39's and would convert to that band a lot of work for little return .... The detector was a 1n21 diode and the receiver was many KHZ wide and the NF was through the roof even with the 6 foot dish I built it was ineffective at best The 2c39 was a good old tube and at that band with a little work and one great antenna you might have had a shot at moon bounce ....
Yep I opted not to get the 1290 MHz board for the Kenwood ......
Back in the 60's in the signal corps we worked mostly on low band VHF most common radios were AN/GRC3, RT70 and VRC12's which I got to work on again in the early 80's along with the WSC3 (200-400 MHz) and ARC-182's. The radios change get smaller and better but much is no different that the ARC5's of WW2 ... -
WA4GCH "Like I said HERE we have seen people JAILED for using radios to warn of cops .."
Off topic but that thread is closed so I can't add it there. Just FYI but at the time I knew I remembered something about this subject in the state of Florida. Just could not remember what. Class action suit says Florida Highway Patrol illegally tickets motorists who warn others about speed traps -- link below
http://www.wtsp.com/news/topstories/article/207550/250/FHP-sued-for-giving-out-illegal-tickets
"Florida Statue 316.2397 -- under which Campbell was cited -- does not prohibit the flashing of headlights as a means of communications, nor does it in any way reference flashing headlights or the use of high beams. However, the FHP trooper who wrote the ticket either didn't know or didn't care.... However, the lawsuit says the FHP is well aware they are wrongfully applying the state law and they are doing it as a means of generating revenue. In 2005, a court order was even issued saying the state law doesn't prohibit the flashing of vehicle headlights. Campbell isn't the only one. Since 2005, FHP records show more than 10,429 drivers have been cited under the statute. In addition to seeking the refund of the $100 ticket, the lawsuit seeks damages in excess of $15,000."
Just FYI, some of the 10,429 drivers were ticketed for CB warnings and are included in the class action. Did not study Statue 316.2397 to see if radio was specifically mentioned but I know from another article (I can't remember the location of) that in the class action are a few thousand truckers ticketed for the CB warning rather than using lights. -
Perhaps the word is getting around. That might be why I don't hear as many truck drivers warning of bear traps anymore....either that or their trucks can't/won't go fast enough to break the speed limit. I can only wonder how many cops even still run CB's in their cars anymore.

Yes they do, well in North Dakota they do. I was sitting at a potato warehouse just off of Highway 2 out near Larimore ND. Was waiting for the crew to get there. I heard over the radio. Hey east bound big truck? Yea, go ahead. Could you please pull into the rest area, going to do a quick walk around and paper check. As I pulled out of the warehouse, there was a DOT sitting there doing an inspection on that big truck. The rest area was just kiddy corner across the intersection from the warehouses.

would just like to say Thanks you got it RIGHT. I am and have been a trucker for many years and also done radio work about 15 years and it is good to have someone like you that I do not even know but said it as I would and have an open mind when someone just wants to find out some help from anyone. We all have been or started at the first run on the learning ladder and trying to work our way up to the top. Just my 2 cents worth. Keep up the good work.
