1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Well my time with the state of NY is nearing to an end(mid sept.). I did some driving a while ago and would like to get back into it since I'm not ready to retire. I've talk to a few companies although nothing seems promising. My challenge seems to be that I have'nt driven since 2004 and that I have a recent misdemeanor. Can anyone tell me if having a record bar you from going into Canada?. Seems that most companies say "ability to enter Canada" in there ads. Also is it necessary to go through a refresher course?
    Thanks for the help.

It is my understand that felonies and DWIs keep you from entering Canada. Most all the big companies want recent experience, in the last three years. Some of the smaller companies and smaller fleets are more flexible.

A recent misdemeanor may or may not be a problem. I would say that is mostly dependent on the company and/or the type of offense. If it is aggrevated or violent in nature or has anything to do with drugs or alcohol it can be tough to overcome.

Thanks Big John. It was a domestic incident. The ex had me arrested. Any suggestions as to which company might be a little flexible?

I don't know of any offhand. How much driving experience do you have? Did you keep your CDL?

When you started off with "Well my time with the state of NY is nearing to an end" I thought you was referring to the pin

NOOOO.... not in THE PEN!!!! Worked for the courts system for 20 years. I took a leave of absence back in 2001 to try to start a business. It tanked, so took up driving with Schneider in 2003. Drove for them until in got reinstated with the job. about 10 months and yes I kept my CDL.

Dang it. So far I've been turned down by Swift(wow) Schneider, PGT, Werner(really??), Central Refridgerated(at least they said why), Gypsum Express(they have applicants who are more qualified, but they still posting jobs), RIST, Roehls(not accepable behavior:arrest record), Crete(no recent experience), Willis Shaw, Millis, and the list seems to go on.
Well, so much for OTR work. going to try the local companies.
