My brief stint with US Xpress confirmed what I have known my entire life. Namely - no free lunch, grass isn't greener, look out for number one, etc... This monster is in business to make $$$$ and they are doing a bang up job in that regard! Q: Has the blind pursuit of the almighty buck had any negative effect on their only real asset, the driver? I won't attempt to keep you on the edge of your seat - of course it has! Some of my most anxious moments were spent behind the wheel of a USX tractor, typically due to the fact that my life and load were tied to an operations person that was too overworked to truly pay attention - or even worst, an op's jockey that lacked the business experience to understand/appreciate what the right or wrong call meant to someone behind a 70' desk!?

T or F? My 1st load w/USX had me sitting 4 days waiting on a shipper thru a famous American November holiday (starts with Thanks.......) TRUE!
T or F? My 2nd load was 30 miles and I only sat 2 days wondering if the SatCom/QualCom, fuel dept, fleet manager were illusions!? TRUE!

I could true or false all day because my list is that long. Short story; the company did not pay as advertised - miles, yes! Detention, layover and so on, no. Unscheduled repairs were most unwelcome (tires were best obtained elsewhere). Superb fleet manager! My bad, he was also a strong load planner and therefore unavailable most days. MT trailers were a luxury and drivers were often not paid miles or stop pay while chasing all over the countryside hoping to be the first to find that magic empty (reload anyone?). Driver facilities - lets not go there!

I must end with my favorite - I walked away and went to work for another company. No harm, no foul - right? USX took a parting shot by putting the fatal word "terminated" in my DAC. Its going to take my best Houdini act to get around this one!

I did have many good days with this company, human nature seems to sharpen our memory when recalling the negatives. Does USX do anything different than hundreds of other money conscience carriers? Did USX invent driver torture? I think not. The business has problems so pick your poison. I'm still looking for a company to call home and one day I'm gonna find it! (Jimmy Stewart ending!)

Of course they put terminated on your DAC even when you quit. They did the same thing to me when they tried to make me a short haul railhead driver and lied about their pay for locals and I quit them after 6.5 years. I guess quiting because another company had me scheduled for orientation was against their company policy because that is what they did on my DAC report. Their only explanation to this erroneous entry was that it was a pattern of confrontation not any specific violation. You see they want you to do alot of things for free and if a DM should attempt to put in for pay that you are owed, you can bet they get a stern reminder on how it is company's aim to delay paying for anything other then miles as long as possible if at all.

Fortunately most companies are aware of USX's shenanigans and are starting to take the word of the driver over these bozo's who took a company who gave you high miles into a company trying to be like JB Hunt.

Unless you are single young and new to trucking, and have no bills. Save yourself a trip to the ER and the poorhouse and stay clear of this outfit.

After spending 25 years as a RN, "Registered Nurse"; and having been in trucking for 3 years, I must ask these questions:
Why don't truckers take up for themselves?
Why do I see drivers leave one company and go to another, only to be treated in the same unprofessional, disrespectful way?
Finally, why do drivers continue to work for companies that even report to DAC. DAC is a joke. I am speech-less to think that an agency actually exists that will harbour lies from previous employers.

If you think DAC is a joke, wait till you get a bad mark on yours and see how much it makes you laugh!

Driver, some companies tell you anything to get you to go to work for them and it takes a while usually to find out how bad you were took. They usually won't tell you if they report to DAC.

Stand up for ourselves? Alot of drivers are in debt so bad that they might as well be in bondage. If they try to stand up to a company, they get fired or given the next hundred crap loads to make you quit.

The only real power that a trucker has that I've seen is if you own your own truck and trailer. :)

    Thanks TwoCycle,
I have been reported to DAC, by Swift. During my training 3yrs ago, my trainer woke me up after just two hours of sleep and after I just finished driving "12-hours", to practice backing up.
To make a long story short, i backed into another Swift Tractor, Swift fired me and reported this accident on my DAC. I wrote to DAC, explained the situation, albeit, I was a trainee in training, how can this accident be reportable when I never ever backed a trailer and was in training. This remains on my DAC to this day.
I recall as a new grad in Nursing, I gave a patient too much Morphine and they went into Respiratory Arrest, and my Board of Nursing never punished me for this...honest mistake by a new grad.
Trucking management and the companies that help trucking management are both feverant liars and con men/women. I can't seem to buy the facts that you stated TwoCycle about why truckers don't take up for themselves. I do and with my fists if I have to. At least I know I have the last word and can walk away from these ignorant pompous ########.

Your story is getting too commom place these days in the what I call the, "Swift Wannabee" trucking industry!! Max out the $$$ at any cost---we got plenty of new drivers coming out of CDL mills to take your seat!! And DAC is truly a 1-way street to 'blackball!' Experienced drivers at these 'companys' with the good DAC's are not wanted unless they will work for min. starting out as in 'My' company----another 'Swift Wannabee!' And even then, those experienced drivers know what BS is and wont put up with much of it---so they are a liability to the company!!!!!!!:biggrin_2553::biggrin_25516:

Michael, Sorry that you've had this trouble. Lot's of drivers are in this same boat. This trainer should have never woke you up for backing up training but these things happen in trucking. This is why you have to protect yourself and tell the trainer you're not awake enough or rested enough for this. These people make it hard to say no when you're a newbie. A backing accident is a real no-no but it seems to happen often. The drill here is to GOAL. I'm sure you know this now but maybe you might be a trainer someday so teach your students well! Good Luck.
