Wow. I gotta say. This is the first time I've ever heard a man say he's morally opposed to making sure he's physically intact. ...er.... I didn't mean it that way. Anyway, what's he going to do if he winds up with a serious medical problem "down there" that could potentially cause irreparable damage or cost him his life? Refuse medical attention because it involves his nether region? Is it less moral to get medical attention than it is to die from a condition that is treatable?
A hernia is one of those things that is easily taken care of, yet it needs to be found. If not treated, a hernia can become quite serious. The intestine pokes through a weakened spot in the muscle wall. You don't know about it because you were "morally opposed" to the 2-second check for it. More and more of your intestine drops through the weakened area. Pretty soon, there is a small loop of intestine poking out under the skin. It twists around and, due to its location (your perineum) you sit on it all day because you are a truck driver. The part of the intestine poking through strangulates and first, nothing can pass through it, second, it dies. Now you're in a heap of trouble. You either get it taken care of....or you die too. Still morally opposed to it? Wow.
My trainer was a strictly religious Islamic man from Africa. They are never seen by female doctors in the country he is from. It is considered immoral for a man to be naked with any woman other than his wife. Period. His first DOT physical was done by a woman doctor. He had a choice: take the physical or go home. He had to think about it. And took the physical. A man who is only ever naked with a woman for one purpose is going to have a certain ...uh... reaction, which was the case with him. He apologized to the doctor and explained why his body responded to such an innocuous stimilus....the mere thought of being naked in a room with a woman. The doctor was very professional about it and let things ....er.... relax... before commencing the physical.
But this guy Phriend is a bit extreme. Perhaps it would be better to find a different occupation. Regardless of whatever quack you find who will bypass this important part of a physical, you will eventually have to cough for the nice doctor. And please tell me which church you attend so I can steer far, far away from it. If a church is teaching that it is "immoral" to ensure your physical well being, I don't want anything to do with it.
(Add) Here's another thought. Prostate cancer is often found by doing a blood test called a PSA. So let's say your PSA comes back indicating cancer. Will you refuse treatment because in order to live someone will have to touch your pecker?

Thank you. This was helpful.
Sounds like I can find doctors who will understand.
(Or doctors who are intelligent enough to test for
hernias in other ways).
Sounds like I can get by... as long as the company
doesn't choose my doctor for me.
Perhaps the next big question is:
Do DOT physical requirements differ from state
to state? Or is this a Federal thing? -
I was thinking the same thing. I had my done in July. I was like

Next is the colonoscopy in December. I really look forward to that. Luckily they knock you out. -
Dude we've said it before when you go to a company you will have to take and pass a physical to their standards DOT + whatever they wanna put you through. Same as you trying to find a Dr. You have a 50/50 shot at either droppin drawers or just answering a few questions.
mtnMoma Thanks this. -
Not a doctor "who understands" or one I would call "intelligent." The word "incompetent" actually comes to mind. What part of "was a tad confused" did you miss?
The federal DOT mandates what is checked for and what is not. It is not a state-by-state issue.
And if all you want to do is "get by" then stay off the roads. This is not a business wherein anyone can afford to simply "get by." Unless you meant get bye-bye.
Bye-bye!Hitman, lonewolf4ad and mtnMoma Thank this. -
My DOT check was helpful in my case, found out that I did have a hernia. A hernia does not disqualify you from driving. I had it repaired and all in good down yonder again.

Don't tell me a colonoscopy is part of the physical!
-
My last 3 physicals, the doctor just pressed in firmly under my belly button, in the bladder area....haven't had to expose the boys since high school sports physicals.
Diesel Dave, Phriend and Injun Thank this. -
Conventional medicine makes me laugh.
After sixty years...
"Oops! I guess we didn't need to touch
your genitals after all. Sorry about that!"
