I am looking at retiring after 27 years in the military :biggrin_255: (MP) and interested in becoming a trucker here in North Bay, ON. I recently emailed 3 local companies (Pro North, Erb and Manitoulin) requesting information on the trucking industry and general questions an uneducated 4 wheeler would want to know. The only response I recieved was from Pro North. They actually made time for me and scheduled a meeting. That is a plus for them...

Now the only complaint I have heard from drivers and a mechanic is the company pays low wages (cents per mile) compaired to the others in the local area, is that true? Can any drivers from North Bay give me there thoughts? Hey, there making time for me to answer questions in person....

Another thing I am wondering about....I was told by the Pro North employee the following, "We do have a training program in place for new drivers which pay $50.00 per day to the new recruit during training, (6 weeks minimum) and requires a promissory/contract note for 18 months service after the training is complete."

I have to sign a contract after thier "recruit training". Does this mean I dont have to spend 7000 of my own money at a local driving school and they will train me themselves? Or do I still have to pay to get my AZ licence? If I pay for a AZ course then what is the contract for? Is the driver turn over bad???

From other threads I have read if a company pays/trains you for your AZ training/course THEN you may be asked to sign an agreement to work for them. This seems fair as they paid for the course/training. What gives? Whats the contract for? Hmmmmm.....my spidey senses are tingling! LOL

I have served four tours overseas (including Afghanistan) and have had so much c*** fed to me sideways :biggrin_2555: over the years I am not too worried about the BS that seems to come with my potential new career choice.

I have learned over the years to take things into perspective. Being gone for 6 weeks is NOTHING like working 18 hour days in Afghanistan for 6 months!

Looking forward to some honest comments. Dont need to sugar coat your answers!

My honest advice would be run as far and as fast from Pro North as you can. If you drive by their yard it's full of trucks for a reason. Erb isn't too bad, don't know if they're hiring though. When i worked there they didn't have a training program. Manitoulin you can get on the 4x4 program, 4 days out 4 days home (miles may vary lol). No U.S. just Ontario and Quebec. They have a school in Sudbury, a friend of mine who is also retired military went through the school and got hired by them. They also pay a lot more than Pro North.

I think the $50 a day would be extended training after you have completed driving school. I don' know of any Ontario company that pays tuition fees.

The reason for the contract would be to recover some of the costs associated with training. Another reason would be so they know they have a driver filling that seat for 12-18 months.

If you can, get in and talk to Erb as I would say they were the best of the 3 choices you gave. Being in North Bay you have a lot more choices as well as it's part of the major North-South route

You've already said your spidey senses are tingling that should tell you something. All trucking companies will lie to you but Pro North will lie to you then laugh about it when you're on the phone with them asking them what's going on. I know quite a few people that have worked there, none of them have anything good to say about the place. I used to shunt at a place where they came in a lot and every one of their drivers hated it, complained about having to argue about pay, garbage equipment etc.(same thing every driver complains about, but they really meant it). Like I said Erb isn't too bad a place to work, I prefer Manitoulin but that's just me.

As I am new to the trucking industry I do want to hear what Pro North has to say. I was told they would answer my questions......came up with 53 of them....LOL. My next post will be on Monday after my meeting.

Well if they're like most recruiters...if their lips are moving, their lying.lol

Go see Erb ,you can't go wrong with them.I worked for them back in the 70's and 80's and they were a top notch company then and still are. Most drivers that I worked with back then are either still there or retired from there.
