they do a lot of rail freight out of jax. try csx rail. i know raven, heartland run alot in florida and even have nothing but florida runs. going and looking into LTL companies is a sure bet there to. it all depends on your exp.

Haven't been to school yet...I was thinking of just going to Roadmaster here in JAX and then talking to companies here in the area....it'll be after Labor Day before I can start that venture and will likely have to do it over 8 weekends which stinks but can't necessarily afford to quit the day job at this point. I also have to deliver a son to college in UT in a couple of weeks 1st.

I'll likely look at Heartland and Maverick...being a brand spankin' newbie...I'll have to see what I can get.

I also have a friend who operates a company who has about 6-8 rigs that he uses in a very specialized business that I will also approach. He doesn't haul freight but his 1st year's salary is high $40's which is low for me versus where I am now but for CDL CL A opportunities, seems to be considerably higher than most all 1st year OTRers. And home on weekends which will make the transition much easier.

Desk jockey to OTRer....I wonder how many people made and survived that transisiton? Maybe I'll start a new thread.

because the older I get the more I am focusing on being happy in my life and what I do. when I am laid down for the proverbial dirt nap, it won't matter what I did, I just want to enjoy what I do.

Check out Contract Freighters, Inc in Jacksonville, FL. I have recently graduated Sage truck driving school here in PA and have recently found out that CFI has a program now for students. CFI will send you to school to obtain your CDL A license and you do not have to sign a contract like most truck driving companies with schools want you to do for 1 year. You can leave at any time you want with no financial cost to you. I have just learned this from talking to a CFI recruiter a few days ago. View there webpage, cfidrive.com Talk to a recruiter and see what they have to offer you. Have a great day.

In 1991 I helped a friend that worked the front desk at a ramada inn in cocoa fl,get started in trucking. He went for free thru brevard county cummunity college in cocoa or melborne fl. It takes three months but he learned the trade really well. Poole hired him out of school, then schneider bought poole and he stayed on with schneider, hauled paper loads in and out of fl and home weekends or when he wanted to be. Haven't heard from him in a few years but probably still trucking as he really loved his new trade immensely. Just a thought, maybe jax has a cummunity college there that teaches it. Good luck to you.
