As an owner operator when you lease to a company they may pay or help pay for tags and so forth as an incentive for you to lease with them. If you also use their insurance company for your truck can they dictate to you and make you run your truck the same speed as their company trucks, like 62 mph ? If so, how do you get around this ?

It depends on the compnay, some track you electronically and will give you safety violations, even if you speed is legal.

The best way is to work for a different company!

QC regulates that you can only LOG your ENTIRE day at 65mph (used to be 60mph) but if you know driving, unless you are out west and run in the open open spaces, you will not average 65mph thru your entire day, so it works out. They do not govern your truck, just your logs....

I know SWIFT used to set a governor on anyone who leased onto them at 65mph. Which i think is total BS

    KRAKAJACKJONSON Thanks this.

I don't think it will matter whether you are a lease/purchase, a lease operator or what they pay for. They are free to set any company policy or rules that they wish. If you break these rules they can terminate you.

    SHC Thanks this.

Back in 2004 I called Knight about a dedicated run and was interested in leasing to them. They told me my truck had to be govern at 62 or 65 can't remember but I just laughed and told the recruiter I own a truck and want to lease it to you not be one of your share croppers and she told me she that is their policy. I couldn't believe it and can't believe anybody would lease on to company that does that.

Safety policies are set by the company. But items like speed are going to be dictated by an insurance carrier or they have been having log issues and they are "self regulating" so that when/if they get audited they can show they are taking action.

Lease to a good carrier that's about getting the job done and not trying to turn an O/O into a company schmuck!

When you pull their trailer you are under their control. It does not matter about your bobtail insurance.
