So basically , not a math major but for lifetime maps with rand you pay

If you are talking about Garmin ... that's not true.

Remember, Garmin's are either 4.3" or 5" screens ...vs ... TND's at 5" & 7".

And the new Garmin dezl 560LMT (Lifetime Maps & Traffic) is at best approx. $90 more than than TND 710 and over $190 more than the TND 510.

Also, remember this a solution to the drivers that had purchased the TND 500 or 700. (Rand has made the commitment to them, just as PC*Miler has made with their units to provide support and map udates with earlier versions.)

Or would you rather have an un-updatable gps ... but then atleast you would have something to bi*th and complain about .

(Please note I'm not demeaning any driver out there ... as I have been a driver since 1992 ... I've been there, done that ... and even got the t-shirt.)

All in all, Rand McNally has solved the issue regarding "map updates" that everyone has been asking about. (And with a "lifetime" feature.)

As far as the PC*Miler Nav 450, 550 & 750 ... I agree that PC*Miler has the far superior program (cost wise) through its MapSure program ... with offering ...

i'm haveing a problem with my 700, I think its just the power wire, although it could be the mini usb plug on the GPS itself. Is there anyway to get another powerwire? (the 12v car charger one?)

There is definitely a problem with the sound or speakers in the 710. Less than 2 months after my husband bought one it stopped talking and making sounds. We contacted Rand and they sent us an RMA and a label to send it to them. We purchased a second one for my husband to use since it would be atleast 5 weeks before he got home to pickup the repaired / replaced 710. Rand fixed the unit and returned it (don't know what they did to it, no notes or anything saying what was done to it) and it has been sitting here waiting for my husband to get back home to get.

In the mean time he has been using the 2nd one (we call it Sam 2) while he is on the road. Well about 2 weeks after buying Sam 2, it stopped talking and making noise too! He didn't even have it long enough to get back to the house to pick up the repaired one!

Since it was less than a month Pilot is willing to exchange it so he went in to Pilot to exchange it but they were out of them. The next Pilot that he went to was also out of them. The manager there said that he had none and would not be getting any more. He said he refuses to sell them any more because he keeps getting people coming in to exchange them because the sound went out on them. My husband did finally find a Pilot that had one and got it exchanged.

Hopefully this one won't have the same problem and will at least last long enough for him to get back home to pick up Sam 1. That way he will always have a backup in case one goes out again.

I will say that he had tried another brand of GPS when the second one stopped talking but he liked a lot of features of the Rand a lot better. So we have come to the conclusion that he will always need to have a backup with him since the Rand has shown a history of not lasting long. It is a frustrating having $1000.00 tied up though. Hopefully having 2 of them will be enough.

Don't know what we will do when they run out of warranty, hopefully all the bugs will be fixed by then.

 

I thought if you had a registered TND that you would automatically get free map updates. I guess I didn't read the announcement well enough. I have already put out $1000.00, it is going to kill me to put out another $200.00 for map updates!

 

Cost of doing business... I know that isn't a great answer, but it does come off of your schedule C if you itemize your tax deductions.

 

What if there was a way to possibly WIN a FREE "Lifetime Map Update" from Rand McNally, by simply signing up for a newsletter, or "liking" a Facebook page or something along those lines? Would you folks that have a TND 500 / 700 be interested?

Not sure how we could let you folks here know yet, while still staying within the guidelines here, but lets see what what we can do.

My husband was going from a Pilot at I-75 exit 358 in Ocola, Fl to Lithonia, GA and the TND 710 was trying to route him on 40 miles of back roads before putting him on I-75. He was AT I-75!

Why would it want him to use other roads when it was going to put him on I-75 in 40 miles anyway?! He had it set at USE Freeways and fastest route. If he put Freeways on PREFER it would use I-75 all the way but why not with Use with fastest? He doesn't like setting Freeway on Prefer because then sometimes it will try to route him 100 miles out of the way.

I think there is a problem with routing on the 710 as this is not the only time the 710 routed him in a strange way.
