I have an '04 Classic with a series 60 14l egr.
I'm getting fuel in my coolant. I understand that this is probably caused by injector cups failing.
Can anyone tell me what it takes to change these? Does the head have to come off?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not totally familiar with Detroit, but I think a shop that's equipped for it can press them in without the head coming off, but it's not something you can do yourself, they have to be pressed in. Do you have a coolant-heated fuel-water separator? I'd make sure it's not the culprit before you get into the engine if you have one.

I'll sure take a look at the fuel separator. It's heated but I think it's electrical.
Thanks for the help. -
Yeah, the separator is electrical. It's more than likely the cups.
If the head doesn't have to come off it will sure make me happy.
I was just thinking. I recently had the number 5 injector replaced. Is it possible that something could have happened when they replaced it? I first noticed a problem very soon after it was replaced.Last edited: Sep 5, 2011

its not likely the injector replacement caused this. if yours is the DDEC V then the head wont have to come off. if it is a DDEC IV then it will. if your ecm has two large connectors on it then its a V if it has several smaller ones on ether end of it then it is a IV

It's a DDEC IV. Dang, I was hoping the head didn't need to come off.
It's funny how it started just after the injector was replaced though. -
its possible that the injector replacement caused it, just not typical. ask if who ever replaced the injector if they used the "fatty" o-ring. you might be able to get away with just re o- ringing all 6 injectors, but make sure they use the "fatty" o-ring.
mackdaknyfe Thanks this. -
Thank you. It will be in the shop first thing in the morning. I really appreciate the help.

The truck has been at the Freightliner shop since 0700 Tuesday. They still haven't worked on it. This is not fun.
