If you are going to take it home and work on it and not drive it for a while you should be able to get a single trip insurance from OOIDA or the dealer.

Then you need to get bobtail insurance and make sure that you get it plated. Not sure what options you have in CA on plates for this but hopefully they have something cheaper than full commercial plates. CA is like IL, pricey.

you could try registering it as a recreational vehicle, untill your ready to start operations. I don't know how hard it is to swap the registration back and forth though. I would think a recreational vehicle would have substantially less insurance cost though.

OOIDA will set you up with month to month bobtail/unladen liability insurance. It's pretty cheap as well.

Many variables but if you don't have experience, based in good location and reserves that is often the case.

That isn't as straight forward as it sounds......sadly.. :biggrin_25513:
..You can't just walk into the DMV and register it as an RV, at least not here in this state. The rig has to be modified...although each state varies somewhat.

You could setup a base place just for that state and skip IRP altogether...
    (intrastate operation only)...

I don't know that you still can, but it used to be that you could buy farm tags in Missouri. All plates in Missouri expire at the end of the year. If I were doing it I would buy a 36,000 farm or local tag. This would be legal as long as you haul only your products or nothing and would allow you to scale an empty trailer. I'm guessing they would be about $300 - $400 for a year, so half that now or one fourth on Oct 1st.

You would have to check your state to see if something like this was possible.
