There are a few questions that are asked on Stevens quizes concerning hazmat but they don't do any type of endorsement test. The hazmat is done on your own and not through Stevens.

Sorry if I sound Stupid I just want to make sure I understand. I will only take testing on the Hazmat if I get the endorcment, I will not take it in order to get my CDL.
Was I correct on the chapters that I will be tested on? 14-2-5-6-11. If I am correct there is 1 permit test and 4 written test for the CDL? Thanks for taking the time. -
There are some general hazmat questions on the general knowlege portion of the tests, but for the hazmat endorsement you need to wait till your back home and have transfered your license. Or you would have to pay all over again for the background check and endorsement fees which add up over 100.00Shiftylots Thanks this.

Had a good friend who is no longer with stevens, has went back to his field in Detroit Michigan, and he told me it took one day to transfer his Texas CDL to Michigan CDL. Pay the transfer fee, new picture, and he was done.
You will find the HOS for trucking are different than for a pilot, as we can pull over and stop, something an airplane just can not do.
I self paid to a private school, $4995. Then had my choice of what training company to go to, keeping my options open, just incase I did not fit with the company. I found that to be the better route for me. Besides, as of Today Stevens has reimbursed me for the entire cost of my self paid school, and I did NOT have to do any of the transfer stuff, and I had my HAZMAT and all other endorsements before I went to Stevens. -
And don't forget that TSA is involved before you take the hazmat tests (at least here in Michigan.) The SOS wants TSA's paperwork before you can test for the hazmat endorsement. I don't know if that's the same everywhere, but I suspect it's similar.Last edited: Sep 8, 2011

Of course they're different. I'm just saying I've got a whole career of experience with duty regs from an operational standpoint as well as a regulatory enforcement perspective and there are similarities. In aviation, for example, there are different rules for flight and for duty on scheduled, unscheduled, 1-pilot, 2-pilot, 3-pilot, 4-pilot, domestic, international, and "special" operations. There are rules that apply when a crew exceeds the maximum duty or flight time because of weather and such.
The rules are different, but they come out of the same DOT, so there will be similarities as well as modal-related differences.
Of course, I'm so anxious to get out of this aviation business that I might just forget everything I know...then all the rules will be new!

That's a huge draw for me. As much as I hate taking tests, the thought of having to take the Texas tests then take or re-take the Michigan tests just drives me buggy. And there's the sleeping in my own bed every night part and not having to deal with a roommate. But $4,995 would pay off a credit card....

Shifty, so when are you going to be in Dallas? This Weekend? I'm assuming you will be attending the whole 3 week training. I will be there for my Orientation 1.

I just got an answer from the Michigan SOS:
My question: I think I understand the rules, but let me validate. I live in Michigan permanently and have a Michigan Operator License. I will be employed by a trucking company based in Texas; if I attend their driver academy without a CDL, I must first obtain a Texas CDL. Since I can only have one license and since I live in Michigan, when I finish the training/testing, will I just bring that Texas documents and all required Michigan documents to the DOS for the transfer?
Their answer: Thank you for contacting the Department of State with your question. Yes, you are correct. If you will have a hazmat endorsement, you will need to get fingerprinted by TSA first.
Short and sweet. -
