Hi I live near Orlando and I'm wondering if there are any of the runs described in the title?

I have OTR experience, and I have been looking into going OTR again but I'm currently living in Florida doing an LTL (HAND UNLOADING WITH ROLLERS) type job and I love the exercise but would much rather get a job that's drop/hook on both ends, picking up a trailer where I drive my car to work in the morning, driving the truck to somewhere, dropping/picking up another trailer, and taking it back to where my car is type runs.

I'd rather get my exercise by working out, not by breaking my back.

Additionally, roller unloads require putting empty crates back on the trailer, sorting stuff right, and a lot more liability if something goes missing and you didn't account for it just right.

I don't want to get blamed for something I miss count, and when you unload a gazillion boxes by hand each day and you're sweating and you've got a pace to maintain it's not like you have time to read each label before you "throw it" onto the rollers so that's something I don't want to risk since I've got a great record and lots of great references and I want to keep it that way.

Basically I'm looking for a two way drop and hook.

I hauled a shipping container yesterday for my company (they do store deliveries mostly but every once in a while they move a container).

That was hauling a loaded one to JaxPort (jacksonville port authority) and taking an empty back.

Simple. Now, is there anything like that (containers or not) that's a two way drop and hook type deal?

------I know the mega-carriers have those kinds of local/intermodal runs in most each state, but are there any non-otr carriers that do that (so you KNOW that you truly are going to literally do that run and be back at your car to drive HOME at the end of the night???)

    Thanks for any input.

I'm going to own my own truck some day no matter what it takes. I will make the sacrifices I have to make, but until I get my own truck I'd rather be home once every 24hrs than go OTR, i'll be a bat out of (you know where) when I get my own truck but I'll be playing by my rules when that time comes and things will be a lot different than working for the mega-dont-care-about-you-carriers.

If i have to work for n e one i'd rather be home at night.

    Any answers much appreciated :biggrin_2551:

Publix and Winn Dixie both have DCs around Micky Town. Swift is putting day cabs into some of the Wal Mart DC's.

Hey... that's funny I just hauled my first container ever yesterday. I'm working for an LTL roller-unload company right now, but I guess every once in a while they need containers moved.

I got my Jaxport card yesterday so I can haul containers up there and stuff, but doing it for the company I'm working for I'm getting 11 bucks an hour. (I was hired through a temp agency and they only pay hourly on any work done except for the store deliveries). They have to pay much more for the store deliveries because people would quit real quick if they didn't since they are PICKING UP EVERY SINGLE BOX ON THE TRAILER BY HAND.

But.. the container's they don't pay much for hauling, nor do they pay much for being at the DC where the trucks are on "standby." The good money is only in the store-unloads and they suck.

The run I did yesterday was Orlando to Jaxport and it's one of the easiest runs I've ever done. Sure there was some wait time at Jax but if running containers pays good I'd definitely like to do that.

Does anyone have more info on the container runs, who does them, how to get into them, etc.?

I don't want to get a low hourly wage to do, but if I got paid a decent amount per hour or a decent "per load" rate it could be something I'd be really into.

I'd rather stay local than go OTR again if at all possible but I'm just not thrilled about hand unloading every single box on a FIFTY THREE FOOT TRAILER day after day for way less money than I made OTR.

(Sorry for rambling... advice much appreciated).:biggrin_2552::walk:

You might find something with UPS, I heard of a guy pulling doubles like that for them, being home every night. If you want to consider tanker, you can fill up Racetracs for Energy Dispatch, they pay very well, you might qualify with your experience. They got runs for Orlando.

Publix does not hire drivers. You Must work your way up thru their warehouse to earn the opportunity to drive for them. It takes years to earn that opportunity.

I know they make you do like a 90 day probationary period working as a yard jerk, warehouse guy or something but then you can move up can't you.
