I've said this many times, that a lot of new and some old drivers do not read signs, for the life of me, I cant figure out why?, and I'll agree the driver was probly follow a gps, set for cars
-
Even truck specific GPS's have a disclaimer noting that the given routes are subject to discrepencies, meaning a GPS should never be a substitute for a good trip plan.
Not all bridges have the low clearance signs. Some people think it's a funny idea to remove them. It's a case of bad judgement, and no common sense. You can hire a monkey to hold a steering wheel. -
And yet,,, somewhere, a yuppie hipster is crying.
One less selfrightious Passat with "heal the planet" bumperstickers to cut us off. -
"When a truck that's 13 feet 6 inches tall tries to drive under a bridge that's not quite that tall, it doesn't make it," said city Patrolman Jeff Carpenter, who responded to the scene.
Top flight detective work.Brickman Thanks this. -
not getting anything past 'ole Jeff are we.....
that whole area is or was under water last I heard.. -
NY is one of those states that measure from the axle up. If that bridge was 12'1" then it would of took the roof fairing off.
White and black height signs measure from axle up yellow and black height signs measure from ground up. NY isn't the only state out their that does this, their a few more out their on the east coast.
I personally creeped with my 13'6" under some of these low bridges, drumped my air bags out, pulled the truck to it as close as I can then stopped got out took a look then pulled the trailer under as close as I could took a look and it fit. Just creeped threw on low gear cause road surface under bridge wasnt even and was bumpy, it looked so close a sheet of folder paper wouldn't of fit between trailer and bridge.
Then I asked a local driver about the low bridge color difference height signs and that's what he told me. -
You are completely WRONG. Yellow and black signs in NY are about a foot low. 12'6" will be 13'6". Green and white, saying actual clearance, are actual clearance. You see these most up on 20.
The whole clearance thing is ridiculous. NY should have cleared this up decades ago, and they haven't done anything about it. I guess they have to pay all those pensions, and it's not easy since they drove all of their manufacturing base south.Gasienica Thanks this. -
I knew it was one way or another. Wasn't out east in 3 years. Thanks for the correction though I'll try and remember if I ever roll east again.
