Hello all, been reading here a lot and am happy to find a place where most any question can be answered, about trucking anyway!
I'm a 54 year old ex carpenter. Had a 29 year run there but I can't buy a job as one now. Can't sit behind a desk and always worked with my hands so I decided trucking was it. Always loved driving so that helped. Plus I did not want to go back to school for a couple years before starting my second career.
Had a rough start though, started having problems with my legs just after plopping down money for school. Halfway through school I had a procedure done, couple of weeks off of school there, but now the proud owner of a couple stents in my legs, several new meds and a clean bill of health along with a fresh CDL.
Sure was a pain getting my medical card back after that, thing was only 2 months old! Doctors letters, documents by the handful. Lot's of faxing paperwork and phone calls.
But all is well, I've been offered the rest of my training and a job with Roehl. Should be hearing from my recruiter with a start date this week:yes2557:
I've been and am chompin at the bit..... eager to get moving.
I have been enlightened about many things here and appreciate all the people willing to pass along advice and knowledge. I know I'll be back on a regular basis for lots of the same in the next year or so.
Happy to be a member of this site, the industry and pleased to meet you all.

    levi39 Thanks this.

You can learn a lot from Roehl, really focus on their teaching. If you like it you can make it a career there, if not they'll give you a nice solid base to build off of. Take advantage of what they have to offer, learn, learn, learn, learn, learn. The more you know the easier things get.

PS I was only responding because my intent was to make fun of you because you were old....

Yes Meltom, one the main reason I went with Roehl it their teaching method and they seem to be very safety conscious and have seen anything regarding lack of equipment maintenance. Sure I'm expecting to get a rig with lots of miles, but I want safe equipment. My plan is to get a year at least with them then see what I feel like.
You can poke me with a stick, I take that kind of stuff very well but have been known to reciprocate..... My age? Sometimes being an old fart has
    huge benefits!
I'll have to get to know you Mel, not much on your profile besides "4 wheeler" so I'll have to dig around a bit!

    Meltom Thanks this.

Hey Hosss, you'll be a long way from home in Salem! I had a commitment from TanTara with .34 to start but don't think I want a roller skate.
Roehl should have me at .38 at 12 months. Starts at .32 Phase 1 training pay is $600 for 8-9 days and phase 2 pay is $90 a day for min. 13 days.
I live on the IL / WI border a couple miles off 90/94 so maybe that might help with home time. They have a big yard in WI, going there for training soon.
Good luck with orientation and all that.

    Welcome to the party!

Plenty of people getting into trucking at your age. As long as you learn and pay attention, you should do fine!
