Thanks Festus. I hope so also. "They say" you can haul most anything a van can with a refer but does it work that way with Roehl...... One of the big reason I went with them is their safety training and record. 6 months or a year from now, who knows where the wind might blow me. Mostly I just want to learn, the safe way and get a consistent paycheck even if it's a paltry one for a while and keep my history good. I found lots of local work, some weekly and home nightly. Most wanted at least 6 months experience. Keeping an open mind and who knows, I may like the Roehl way and stay there.
I did have an offer from the landscaper I plowed snow for the last couple seasons, pull a dump for him in and out of Chi town. Graciously turned him down flat!

    Festus71 Thanks this.

Small group I went through Orientation with was 12 total people.
By the time the last person was picked up on Thursday afternoon by his trainer, (I was second to last to be picked up) Roehl had bought a total of 54 breakfast, lunches and dinners for the group over a 4 day period.

Roehl has what, 3 to 4 people a week that start their truck school? Truck school at Roehl is supposed to last 3 weeks right? Then you go home weekends on Friday and come back Sunday night? Right? I think that is the way I understood the set up of the Roehl truck school. I could be wrong but I believe that is how I understood it.

    So take 4 people x 3 meals a day that equals 12.
Take 12 meals a day x that by 5= 60 meals a week. Subtract Friday's dinner and that leaves you 56 meals a week.

That's 56 meals a week over five days for that group of 4 students. How is that different than feeding 12 people 54 meals over a 4 day period while they go through Orientation?

As I suggested to the other poster. Roehl or any trucking school for that matter who has a working relationship with the hotel the way Roehl does, can offer the student two plans.

Plan 1: Truck school only at a certain price.
Plan 2: Truck school with a meal price included.

Some students would opt for Plan 1 and pay for his/her own meal.
While other students low on cash or just unable to buy food, could pick this option.

Not hard to do or set up. Colleges do it all the time to students who live in dorms. Roehl has a good idea of what it is costing the company to feed these people going through Orientation at Marshfield, Gary, etc.

YYou're onto something there. But I think Roehl will stay how it is and its fine. Man I was only saying. Lol. I would have paid more to not have to eat noodles all week. Lol.

which part constitutes evolution 1 and 2? I thought part 1 was CDL school, which means WE pay them.

School was separate from evolutions. But now with phase training its different. You get zero pay while in the school.

I worked for Roehl back when the first took over Blume Refers. I transferred to the brand new refrigerated division, and was very happy. They gave me an additional 2 cents a mile to do it too because I have previous reefer experience. Everything went well for 18 months. Great miles, home when they promised, and no screw you's at all, until I got a offer from family to work local. Now granted I was a trainer for Roehl, so I felt obligated to give plenty of notice. DO NOT DO THIS! That is when satan comes out. On my last trip out for 2 weeks from the house, about 10 days into it, they route me through the Gary terminal. Ask me if its ok for me to turn the truck in there, and they would rent me a car to go home with to Saint Paul. Of coarse I say no problem. Well now I am listed on DAC as being terminated. DO NOT TRUST THEM! If you quit, quit without notice. It's way better than what I got.

Well I just got all my paperwork in order from my Dr. and should get my start date today. I don't plan on quitting for a while, but you never know. I want to get some experience and not have the hassle switching companies while I do. Just buckle down, ride the storm out for my first year and learn.
I've read a lot regarding quitting and getting canned. Lot's of different stories and opinions. Wondering if there truly is a "right" way to leave any company.
Most of the time as a carpenter it was so easy. "You can't fire me! I QUIT!" Things have changed some in that field but for the most part you just had to prove yourself with the next company without a lot of background checking. Most of the tradesmen I met in that field seemed to be a different "breed" including myself and most contractors understood this, usually. Now don't get me wrong, I'm PROUD to become part of another different breed! Give me a little time and I'll fit right in!
So you do it the way the industry dictates and they still screw you over.
So now what, Squid? How do you get that off your DAC? I know there is a process for that. Could they not put on your DAC you quit without notice? Some good threads about how to document this with certified mail and such so this is avoidable, how did you notify them? Seems like it should not be such a major hassle to give notice and not get the shaft.
You can bet being a newbie if (most likely when)the time the time comes for me I'll be searching and reading my butt off here before I do!
Squid, nice that you covered yourself and had something lined up before you quit. Good luck.

Yes, there is a good way to post on Dac that you left on good terms, but most companies don't use it. I'm sure that is the reason the person that set this site up did it. Most companies will list you as Quit without notice. That is probably the best you can get. There is also companies out there like Southern (SRT) that list everyone with truck abandonment. I heard there are over 50 drivers suing them over that. Yes there is a way to get it off your DAC report, but along with many other screwed up things in this country right now you can't win. You will need to hire a lawyer and sue them. To go up against a Multi million dollar trucking company in court, you better have the bankroll to back you up. Most of us bottom feeder Truckers just suck it up and live with it, and the Trucking companies know it.

My ONLY complaint is that I'd like some more miles. 2600 as an average seems to be the glass ceiling here if you're not a student. I on RARE occasion hit 3000, but not often. I am constantly pestering my dispatcher for more to do (in the most friendly way possible). I LIKE my dispatcher, which is EXTREMELY important, for any newbs reading this. I STILL do not regret coming here for an instant. This company blows the doors off of Marten and deBoer hands down no thought involved.

As for settings on the truck, it IS a short hood (better visibility) with the same detroit 60 series as in your long hood pete. She pulls hills quite well for a company truck (I run I-80 in PA alot) and turns on a dime (for a truck anyway) easy to back up with. I'm averaging right around 6.5 mpg which isn't bad for an older truck. It's got an APU on it and is fairly comfortable to live in. I wish I had a top bunk for extra storage, but can't have everything, right?

About running out of route... If you have a route that's shorter AND faster AND doesn't miss a fuel stop they've designated AND you can prove it (streets and trips/delorme/etc)... talk to them.
About fuel out of route: If you buy fuel out of route for your tractor without talking to someone first you DESERVE to get fired, stupid! Talk to someone first, or better yet, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!

Ive had to buy fuel not at the designated stop and they never said a word. If they didn't constantly run my fuel stop so far out like I was getting 10 mpg. Im done this week with them, but have not had any major issues.
