I know of a low tunnel clearance in the UK, it has a sensor about half a mile before the low clearance, sets off flashing lights a then puts down a barrier similar to a railroad crossing...
-
I know what would work for me. Put a coop under the bridge. I'll be going around.

In the US we also have several overheight sensors along a stretch of I-95 in North Carolina. A sign directs all trucks to the right lane, where they can be measured by the sensor. If found to be too tall, a hard-to-miss flashing sign at the exit offramp instructs the vehicle to take the exit and avoid hitting the overpass.

Good ones, Keep em comin PLEASE

Quote: "Dick Barnard, who chairs the citys traffic safety committee, said its likely that truck drivers are traveling through the city to avoid paying tolls on the Grand Island Bridge."
That's your answer right there. Whatever happened to truckers who trip planed the night before and used maps. Most of the training programs now don't even teach trip planing.
Also the part about the Canadian drivers is a good point. Not just Canadian drivers but drivers that may not read English. There are so many drivers now today that may speak some English but reading it is not as easy and add road speeds to it may make it impossible. CA used to let you take the CDL in spanish but now are doing away with that. Many of the highways in Canada have French and English signs USA is the only country that has laws against having foriegn language signs on the roads. -
To quote Ron White "You can't fix stupid"

put signs up starting about 2 miles up the road
LOW BRIDGE 2 MILES AHEAD
NO TRUCKS
$10,000 fine IF YOU HIT IT
STRICTLY ENFORCED
Make sure the sign is at least 5 feet high and 8 long
put them up every 1/4 mile to bridge
I see a sign that says $10k fine in big red letters, I am going to pay attention.

Give that driver a raise he was hauling a bridge and a Amtrak train
-
This is not the solution.
{The board is now recommending that the road be limited to a 5-ton weight limit for a section surrounding the train bridge to exclude the biggest trucks from passing through at all.}
If drivers are not smart enough to figure out feet and inches what makes them think they will be smart enough to figure out weight limits?
