So I just came across this website a few months ago thanks to some fellow drivers. I see that there is a guy that has been chronicling his experience at Heyl. So far he seems to have hit it right one the head. My experience at Heyl as been similar to that of his. I have been working for them for over 3 years now and my experience has been great. I started out with them as a trainee and spent approximately 6 weeks with my trainer. I had one trainer the entire time. In that 6 weeks we hit just under 45,000 miles. I did most of the driving which is the way that it should be. Being new to the industry, I wasnt quite used to sitting in a truck and driving for 11 hours at a time but if I did get tired or something my driver trainer would usually jump in the seat and drive a few hours. The people in the office are great to work with. From the recruiters to the safety department and my driver manager to the owner I have not had a bad encounter. With the open door policy it makes it very easy to discuss any issues I may come across. As far as the time out is concerned, I was told 7-10 days but I typically like to stay out for a couple weeks at a time. As the saying goes, if the wheels are turning, Im earning! LOL. Ive been to each of the terminals multiple times and so far my favorite is Akron and also Calgary. Once I was assigned my driver manager, we seemed to hit it off tremendously. I was able to chat with him and let him know my expectations and he told me his. He really works with me. There have been a few times I wanted to take some time off in a place other than home and he was able to work it out so I could. I had to tell him a few weeks in advance but he made it happen! As far as miles go im averaging a little over 10,000 a month. Overall I would say that I am pretty happy with Heyl Truck Lines and am glad that I waited to start with them. I had several opportunities to go with companies such as CR England and Werner but I just knew that Heyl was the one I wanted to work for. The other nice thing I like about Heyl is that I was just put on an elog system and its so easy! The only thing I have to remember is to put myself off duty when im stopping for any reason other than pickup/deliver or to get fuel. It took some time to get used to. And now that I dont do a paper log I get to use transflo to send my bills back to the office. For the most part I like that but sometimes the lines in the truckstop can be long and the other thing I dont like about it is that I have to keep the paperwork in the truck for 2 weeks. Oh well though, at least I know my trip is in the office and I will get paid. So thats been my experience at Heyl. If I think of anything else I will put it on here. Im looking forward to other Heyl drivers putting their experiences on here.

I'm new to the industry and in training but have no complaints as I've read and heard many from other companies. Doing paper logs now but not really looking forward to elogs but realize it will happen. I'm used to travel so those gone away from home issues are real but not insurmountable. Also used to transporting freight and dealing with people and operating autonomously using my own brain and that includes the not so common common sense. Eager to get out of training but have a good trainer just the fact of sharing someone elses cab without a real place to "live" but this too shall pass. nwiatrucker... where is home? did you go to WIT?
    Safe travels

That is a good story nwiowatrucker. Glad to see positive stories about trucking companies. I have heard good things about Heyl also. If there was a terminal close to NC, I would probably put in an application with them. Good luck to you. Hope you continue to enjoy your work.

Man I wish they took student graduates from Central Florida. They are one of my target companies once I get the required experience. I see their trucks all the time.

Passiton, I live just outside of the Akron Terminal. I went to DMACC in Des Moines. I went to a college in central Iowa. To xlsdraw, hang in there and when you get 6 months give the recruiters a call. I get into winter haven quite a bit and than end up in the zephyrhills terminal. The first year is always the toughest in the business. No one wants to give you a chance so it makes it hard to get any experience. Make sure you dont work for cash anywhere cause I once referred a guy but it turned out Heyl wouldnt accept that as verifiable experience. There went my 500 bucks. Oh well lol. Good luck to both of you and hope to see you on the road!

    xlsdraw Thanks this.

I am a bit curious since I keep seeing good driver information about Heyl. What are their policies like concerning speeds, bonuses, etc? I have seen them advertising in craigslist locally.
