Anybody ever been to the new costco dc in new market MD? Before you get there you come to a 4 way stop. Costco is straight ahead. A back road with an 11 foot bridge and no place to turn around is to the left. It got hit about half a dozen times so they put a huge sign at the intersection "TRUCKS NO LEFT TURN LOW BRIDGE NO PLACE TO TURN AROUND $500 FINE" No one has hit it since. Money talks.

Hasn't worked in Providence, RI very well....

I'm inclined to believe that a series of flashing lights and a physical barrier (as mentioned previously) along with a substantial fine will be needed.

How about nice heavy fines, save them up and when they have enough, lower the road bed?
Or how about we put TSA in charge of the section of road. By the time the driver stops, takes off his shoes, gets patted down and gives up his coffee (too much liquid), he'll have given up and gone another way! :biggrin_25521:

I don't think that's an issue, though I could be wrong.

Anyone I know is quite aware how tall we are in feet and inches. Most trailers have the height on them in feet and inches, most have a 41 foot mark. We are also quite aware of the weight limits in pounds and speeds in MPH.

The sensors with waning lights are probably the best bet to prevent this but I'm guessing the cost is high for those. If the OP is going to contact the reporter suggest that she contact some places that have the sensors. I've seen them in Pittsburgh, Des Moines and a number of other places so it shouldn't be too hard to find out if they have been effective.

I like the sign, I have seen places with low clearances that have hung sections of steel pipe on a cable at the same height of the low clearance, so if you clang and hit them, you know you won't make it under the real low clearance.

If that sign dont hit the windshield of the truck they will hit the bridge. Half of the ones that hit them bridges only stop because the get stuck

Put up a headache bar. A bright yellow 6' PVC pile hung from two chains across the roadway the same height as the bridge. Post a sign "if you hit this, you will hit that bridge".

PVC shouldn't damage the truck (it's free swinging), but should be loud enough for a driver to realize something is up if he's completely oblivious to any other signage.

But, the biggest problem is the point brought up in the article: GPS systems are probably set to 'bypass toll roads', and sending them down that street.

Also, what is the yellow height sign on that bridge? If it's like the rest in NY, it's already not displaying the true height.

Given the increasing numbers of drivers that ignore other signs; such as "NO TRUCKS IN LEFT LANE", "NO PASSING" or "NO PARKING ANYTIME" do you suspect that will be effective? 8'p

Keep in mind the location for stopping the trucks from proceeding forward needs to be in a place where the truck has at least one turn around option....otherwise...you are still in the same situation with giving the truck no other option.

On I-70 approaching the Eisenhower tunnel...they have height sensors and lights/siren that flash and sound when a rig too tall passes the sensor. That driver knows he can't get through the tunnel...and has a place to change course.
