Just to share some info. I upgraded my smart phone today to the Droid Bionic w/4G

I was using the Hot Spot for internet access on my Droid X and the cost was $20 a month for 2gig of data, going over was going to cost 20 for each additional gig

The new deal with the 4G phone is $30 a month unlimitied for the hot spot that allows you up to 5 devises to connect wirelessly. No overage charge.

The term and agreements on my contract have not changed. I still have unlimited data and internet access with my phone.

I know some of you are using the PTD Net thing to tether your laptop, but I am still trying to do the legal thing.

I keep seeing about tethering being illegal. I'm not sure if that is accurate or if its just what the cell companies are telling customers to scare them. Does anyone have any reference to how it is illegal other then hearsay? Your paying for the service adding a additional device using the same data traveling through the same phone. The worst I could see is your violating the terms of your contract with the provider but that's not illegal just means they could discontinue your service if they choose.

So, if I get JCW a 4G phone, and the unlimited 4G data plan, it doesn't matter ifhe's not in a 4G area? Just checking, because the initial higher cost of the phone would actually not be as much of an issue.

I was just checking out a mobile broadband comparison website and it lists tethering as an option with its own fee structure, so it must be legal. Most carriers charge $15.00 extra a month for it in their plan. Here's the website I was looking at: http://mobile-broadband-services-review.toptenreviews.com/

It's not illegal. But in most cases it's against the terms of service in your contract unless you are paying extra for the privilege.
As far as I can tell, AT&T is the most aggressive at enforcing it. I've heard of some cases where Verizon has intervened, Sprint seems to be the most tolerant. What happens is when you use a consistent heavy amount, 5 gigs seems to be the trigger, you get flagged. Once you have their attention, they can easily tell by the traffic type if you've been up to no good. The fact is most people don't use anywhere near enough data to get flagged, so must don't have to worry about it. The worse than can happen is your service will be terminated.

The iPhone isn't even in the same level. The bionic is 4g with a dual core 2ghz processor and 4.3" screen. The iPhone 4 is only 3g with a 3.5" screen an 800mhz processor.

Just looked up the specs of the phone looks really nice but it is only a dual core 1ghz processor. I had to check because I have only seen dual 1.2ghz in phones so far.
