On this note, there have been numerous injuries and deaths because of this. A 4-pound hammer, a vice grip, a wide putty knife, a bungee cord or two and a can of WD-40 could have prevented most of this. I carry all of this stuff. If I can't get the pin to cooperate utilizing these tools, it's broken and needs to go to the shop. Someone getting under the trailer isn't going to loosen that pin.

Yet, I see people take that shortcut all the time. When I offer tools to help, I get "no, thanks, we got it," a dirty look or an outright "mind your own business." It's not usually rookies, either. Most often, it's trainers or veterans doing this.

I have struggled with pins and had random drivers try to help in this manner. That's a tremendous amount of trust they're placing with someone they've never met before...and in equipment they have no idea of how it's been maintained or abused.

Even I don't want to trust someone else's life to a possible equipment failure or brain fart. Don't get irritated when I decline your offer, citing safety as the reason. Rather, be grateful I value your life more than you apparently do.
