An iPod is like a portable CD player, but instead of CDs, you upload the files (usually MP3 format) directly to the device. There are also many other brands of MP3 players that are cheaper, and often better than iPod (which is made by Apple). Another thing about iPods is that they use a specific cable to hook up to speakers. Other MP3 players use an all purpose cable. It depends on what adapter you use to hook up your music device to your truck's stereo.

The other option is to burn your own CDs. Download the files online, or rip them from other CDs. You can use regular CDs, but I personally get tired of listening to them in the same order all the time. Just make sure the truck CD player can play MP3 files (a lot of newer ones do).

What's great about doing it yourself is you can get exactly the music you want, plus other stuff you like to listen to. I personally listen to audiobooks on long distance trips.

Hope this helps. If you have a computer geek friend, they should be able to do all this stuff for you no problem. Good luck!

I use to listen to 8-tracks. When I was real little it was reel to reel. :)

Just build you a library on your laptop and burn CD's or an mp3 player. I also have a list of my favorite FM stations all across the country. I had Sirius for a year and cancelled. They kept billing me for 3 months. After that ordeal, I had free Sirius for 2 more years. I didn't listen but a handful of stations. FM is almost as good.

Saving is a good idea, but at what expense?
The few bucks a month for sat radio is well worth it in my opinion.
The variety of programming available is a lifesaver
NASCAR races and talk shows, music of all types, Morning news shows simulcast off TV, and even the political talk shows when I need a laugh.
I gave up a few cold drinks and eat a few cheaper meals to make up for it.
Any other format gets old fast after hearing the same thing over and over again.

And have you noticed how the sound quality has decreased with every 'advancement' of technology?

Can't beat multi-channel analog for sound fidelity. Digital just can't come close.

The pinnacle was 4-channel discrete quadraphonic, but I doubt most here have ever experienced it.

One good thing about the iPod is that there are tons of free podcasts.

For years I've been getting books on cd from the library, they let me do a vacation check out so im good for 4 weeks. Id never stay out longer than that so it works well for me.
