Looking to purchase a 2005 Century w/ Detroit 60 and Ultrashift. I'm unsure of gears and rears.
Trying to get a rough Idea of fuel mileage. I've read anywhere from 4.8 - 7.5. I'm hoping for 6, but idealy would like 6.5. Will be running mostly SouthEast, Midwest, and South regions.
The trucks have between 410k and 460k and they are trade ins from Us Express.
Are the autos worth the extra costs? Does Us. Express take care of their trucks??
Thanks,
Chop

Good question, anyone have any idea?

my company truck is a 2007 century with a detroit 60 and the Ultrashift. I mainly run western 11 regional and see a lot of mountains so i have never really had a "steady" mpg to gauge off of. Per the dash i have an average 5.5 mpg. I believe the pitfall of the utrashift is the fact that there is no clutch, which is awesome for downtown stop and go traffic or going up a long mountain (just set the cruise and downshift by hand) but its bad for this reason. The automatic clutch is similar to that of a go-cart, if you're at a stop and want to get moving, you have to step on the throttle until the rpm's get to approx. 950 before the clutch "grabs" and you can start moving. If you have a heavy load it can be quite jarring until you get the hang of it and how to feather the throttle like you would a clutch pedal. Also backing is a whole new experience lol. I think a lot of mpg is wasted in getting going as you cant just slip the clutch with out using throttle to get the truck to start rolling.
Just my .02 -
Ultrashift is made on Autishift base, but with "automatic" clutch. So it runs like autoshift, but you start w/o clutch pedal

we had an 05 just likt the one youare looking at. loved it
we did have a detroit mechanic change the programing (with us xpress's ok) and the milage went from 6.4 to 7.2 and the truck would pull the hill 8-12 mph faster.
you need to call us xpress and ask for brakedown (with the vin # in hand)
1st find out when they got red of the truck..?
the reason is that for part of 2010 and 2011 they were doing 50,000 oil changes...!!
2nd if you talk to the right person they call tell you the breakdown history.
over all they take good care of the trucks as long as the drivers do the same.
the only thing i will add is that the milage is way off for a old 2005 us xpress, i know that they were keeping most of then and would not trade them out until the had over 600,000 on them
i just bought an old 06 us xpress volvo. and am happy with it -
I have a freedomline in a 387 Pete. I get approx 5.25 where ever I run.

Brake check is wheel chocks or a curb. You can check each individually but that eats up a lot of time.
Chop most of the those will probably do mid 6's easily if driven properly depending on loads you may be up around 7. The loose nut behind the wheel can do more about MPG than transmission's can. They are the exact same ten speed sans a stick. The biggest thing with the autoshifts is adjusting your take offs and backing. You will learn throttle control or suffer whiplash injuries.
