Flatbed: Winter Prep

Why would you want MREs? I've had them on the truck before thanks to pulling many loads during Katrina, but I'd rather have real food, that I can rotate. High carb, they either constipate you or give you the runs (enchiladas), and they don't taste that great. Eat what you store, store what you eat.

 

Not are MRE type food as we posted above is bad. Some is VERY good, and isnt all high carb stuff. They last forever and some dont even need to be heated.

A GOOD pair of gloves...heavy duty, warm gloves.
Insulated boots...mine are Rocky Bear Claws (1400 grams Thinsulate)
Wool socks...real wool, not polyester "like alikes".
Long Johns
Insulated coveralls...mine are Carhartt bibs.
Something to keep your head warm.
A good sleeping bag

I used to Build a Hockey Rink in my back yard every winter in VT, about 1/3 the size of a NHL rink. And im not talking about cheating like alot of people do by building a plywood floor and 4" walls and simply filling it with water and letting it freeze NO WAY, i packed the SNOW down with a snowmobile and sprayed water on it until i had 8+ inches of ice, and plowed the snow off to build walls which were sprayed with water till they had 3+ inches of ice to make them solid. Needless to say i spent WEEKS outside from 8am to 3am with a Hose and lots of lawn sprinklers in 10* to -40*. All I had on was sweatpants with Spyder Snowpants over them, BAREFOOT in the Baffin boots, a T-shirt, Hoodie, and a Burton Jacket, with those Burton Gloves and i was toasty warm all night even though by the time i came in i had 1-2 INCHES of ice covering me

long story but theres why its well worth the $$$ for baffin Boots and Burton Gloves.

Did I read somewhere on here about spraying your tarps with an antifreeze solution to keep them from freezing? The small tarp to cover the headache rack is a grand idea. And as far as MRE's go, they beat helll out of starving on the side of the road for sure, but with a little planning I believe you could eat much better. This is a good thread.

 

Umm rock salt or some other type of ice melt for your bed, you cant put anything on top of ice.

 

Not antifreeze but used to purchase deicer in five gallon buckets and a garden sprayer, saved me more than once.

Also since I was running a covered wagon in the winter sometimes picking up thousands of pounds of frozen road spray would put me over gross.

My motto was, if im not over 79 im not makin a dime.

A five gallon bucket can go a long ways, does not eat the wires or tarps and not greasy like antifreeze.

 

New parts in the air dryer and dissectant can, carry several cans of Sterno if you don't have a propane heater.

Where are you seeing ice? I run to Edmonton every week and the lowest temps I've seen are high 30s.
