I got a free cobra 29 classic off my friend, I put a red/white/blue faceplate on it and had a very respectable cb shop put an rfx75 on it. I pulled out the general lee to give one of these new rfx75 monsters (or so people are saying) a try. I just put brand new mini 8 coax in my truck and i'm talking on my astatic 636l mic and the little spring on the bottom of the mic shocked me or burnt me twice. What could my problem be?
The radio is also feeding back through my trucks stereo speakers, and no the coax isnt routed near the wires and the power for the radio is straight from the battery and is an old extension cord so its shielded and away from most of the major wire looms in the truck.
mic zapped me.

Your antenna system has no or little ground, SWR is high, and RF voltages are floating all over. Soon the mosfet final will fail so the problem will be gone anyway unless you fix the antenna system before running power.
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Yup- ground that antenna!
-
Any time that's happened to me it was faulty ground washer at antenna base you are the ground when you get stung

Remember if they want to much for the radio check out most CB sets run about $100.00 or less depending on what you want.
Just had a thought check out your antenna system you might have a short causing the RF to be dumped to the mike cord and the case. -
I don't mind spending the time to run separate ground straps, antenna mount to mirror, mirror to door, door hinge to cab and cab to frame. My only problem is finding nice 1" wide copper braided ground straps in differing lengths. I can't find the dern things anywhere!

You are so right. Check the WWW or junk yards. Diesel Pick-ups have some under the hood. Old police cars also have them in the trunk. (that's where I got mine.) -
what if i was to take the mount side off of two mirror mounts and mount them back to back of eachother making a single mount, then run my wilson 2k up and a tigershark 4 foot steel whip pointing straight down, that in turn would make me a dipole like there was a thread on here about not too long ago. would that solve my issues?

It might help. Just have to experiment and see. Just make sure the antenna pointing down is grounded out to the bracket, i.e. don't use the little plastic washer/spacer.Last edited: Sep 22, 2011
