I would rather something like that for my wife and I on a vacation, Only I am going to be the one giving her a massage, and Vise versa, Not into others touching my ugly body! to each their own. as far as when I am out with my truck on a weekend, I need to be where my load is going or in route to that place and that is always some place different. If it is very hot, I find a motel where I can drop my trailer at the receiver and then park my truck in front of my room. Kinda like to keep an eye on it. I don't see the need to pamper myself unless my wife is with me. So as for me, I wouldn't be interested in something like that while working. Vacation though, Yes!
Would this be somewhere that you would consider staying?

No, I know that Farmville is not a good location for many reasons, lack of fueling centers and shippers are the two big ones.

This is the kind of post I was looking for. I like the fact that you didn't presume that I am clueless as to how to run a business. One sure fire way to find out enough about someone and see if you can trust them or not is to give them enough room to show their true character. Being that this is something that I would run out of my home, after all that is what a B&B is---someone willing to open their home to a stranger. I wouldn't extent an invitation to everyone. You see, if someone takes the time to actually get to know someone and show respect to a stranger, at least until they show they're not worthy of respect, they might find that they have just found someone who can make a difference in their life. There was one comment that asked if I had thought about ROI (Return on Investment). What businessman wouldn't? Hmmm maybe one that is not worried about it! You see I believe in giving back. I'm am guessing that because my profile only shows that I have been driving for six years, that person assumed that I actually think that I could retire from driving, in let's say less than ten years. Not very likely! I got into trucking because I had to deal with a driver much like the main one to attack me here. When I was twenty years old I had worked long enough and built up a strong enough reputation with my employer's customers, that one of his bigger customers came to me and asked me why I didn't start my own business. My reply was MONEY! Well he took care of that little problem. He funded my start-up with the agreement of repayment and to keep his current rate the same during the time I was in business. Not a problem! It was a moving business, one that was focused on moving medical offices and related equipment. When I started hiring, I made a verbal commitment to each employee that if they helped me build the business that they would one day be an owner. I after dealing with the driver I mentioned above I decide to go get my own CDL and I left the business in the care of my right-hand man. He didn't disappoint me. When I came back things were running just as smooth as when I left. Well as it turned out three employees made it until I decided that I had made enough. After making sure that they had furthered their education enough to keep things going; I had my lawyer draw up the paperwork and I signed it over to them. A year later they all agreed to split the customer base and start their own little business. All I can say is good for them. Some might think, why would anyone in their right mind do all of that. Well--- I don't have any children so I don't have to worry about leaving something behind and the local, state and feds have gotten enough from me. Again I am sure that there are some who are thinking; then why are you still driving? BECAUSE I GOT HOOKED! There is just something about hearing that Jake while coming down a mountain, it gives me chills! Well fast forward a few years and five heart attacks later; I think it is best for the public at large for me to give it up. Right now I am off the road because I am scheduled for two very serious surgeries. Will I live through either, maybe! Only God knows that. If I don't then the pipe dream of a Truckers B&B will remain just that, a dream. Personally I think that God wants to see me give it all away first. I will, little by little for as long as He will let me but when it's my time, my fun has just begun. I would like for the three of you to PM me with a way to reach you at some time in the future, maybe you'll get invited to stay with my wife and I for a day or two or maybe you'll get a little something when I'm gone. Either way I'll stick around here for awhile and see if I can find a few other drivers who don't spread hate. I'll make a comment here and there just to let you know if I am still kicking or not. If there is someone else here that wants to suddenly brown nose, forget it. I might have been born at night but it wasn't last night. Just know that there is someone out here looking to change the lives of a few good folks. If you spread hate, make personal attacks on others or bicker back and forth. Take a guess!!!
To those who doubt what I have said is true, hey that's up to you! Somebody is going to get it and my wife wants for nothing!
Oh yeah, asking how much you would have paid would be another good way to judge someone morals. If I invite, you are my guest!
Being that some folks couldn't wait to be rude, my search on this thread has come to an end!Last edited: Sep 22, 2011

Isn't it sad how We The People, need some sort of horrible catastrophe or hardship to bring us together??? The worst one I can think of was the terrorist attack on the twin towers. I was just a kid and from that day forth I wanted to serve in the military. I wish I was alive in the good ol' days where honor and respect were in everyone's vocabulary. To properly address your question Mr. Bowman, I think $99 per night is more than fair and would keep your B&B full to the brim, assuming that it is near the interstate and yadayadayada. Not being able to bring your pet inside however kinda sucks. Your reasoning for this is understood. Many people have allergies and it could bother some of the guests, not to mention your wife or yourself. I am only a wannabe trucker and may not be getting the full picture here but hell... i tried my best. Should be heading to school in November. Hopefully my military experience has prepared me for this. Anywho... take care of yourself Mr. Bowman and good luck with your surgeries.
DaveVA_Bowman, Wiseguywireless and 123456 Thank this. -
I'm a dedicated B&Ber when on vacation. I've spent anywhere from $100-$300 a night, depending on the amenities. And that is where I would make suggestions to you, sir, if you decide to come back and read some more. Offer choices. I prefer a private Jacuzzi tub in my own room. I'm not willing to use a public hot tub, because I'm not willing to be 9/10s naked in a public place (I avoid beaches, too, but I digress!) I wouldn't be much interested in a massage, either. Just not my thing. Offer it as a choice, not an automatic part of the deal.
How many rooms were you thinking of? In most B&Bs, a couple rooms are basic nothing fancy kind of places, then a couple others will be more high tone, and then maybe there's a separate cottage outside from the main house as a kind of "honeymoon" suite. Create some of the basic rooms for drivers just looking to get out of the truck for a night and enjoy some home cooking. Then step up a few other rooms with a Jacuzzi and a recliner in front of a fireplace. Offer services like massages as an extra (to be reserved along with the rest so you have some notice and can arrange for the masseuse.) There is no one-size-fits-all with truckers. So my best advice is offer choices.
The most important thing for anyone running a B&B is to be friendly and open and as gregarious as possible. I enjoy the B&B experience more than an ordinary hotel (and thus will pay more for it) because I feel like a guest in someone's home instead of a customer. That warm welcome and genuine interest in my comfort is what keeps me coming back. -
Guess he's not coming back. Kind of a shame; I liked his idea. Should have found this thread sooner.
-
Well he has thought it out thoroughly and come here to get possibly more info.
And they got it.
I wish them both the best of luck in their business adventures. But if you are gonna deal with the public, you need to tone down the attitude or you'll chase all the customers away. -
You are confusing hate with constructive criticism. You mentioned your 300 acre farm and insinuated thats where the business was going to be.
My mother has owned a restaurant the majority of her life and I know a little about overkill on a menu with a small amount of customers. You take it how you want, but you simply can't stock all that food or it'll spoil or you'll be throwing alot away.
I like your general idea, but we are not talking about CEO's and movie stars getting pampered. We're talking about truckers use to living in a truck. You can tone things down and still have a very attractive business. The idea is to make money.
The health is another issue. Five heart attacks and you don't need to introduce new stress into your life. That area I know well, because I come from a family of early heart attacks. I hate to sound cruel, but it's a little late to be starting a business. It takes a minimum of five years just to get things going. If you have that much land, you are not hurting. Relax, retire and enjoy your family. -
I stayed at motel 6, they stole my towel.
