Question about detention time

    Hey guys,

    I have a general question. We are a small trucking company and I am in a situation that I have a question about.
    We have a load and the customer messed up the appointment time, now we are one day delayed.

    What is the common rate to charge for that extra day?

    We had an appointment at 10pm on 9-21, they say they won't take us till 9-22?

    $700 would be a nice number!

    They will scream and yell and think that $200 will be adequate.

    Thanks for the reply. Wow, that number is really a lot higher than I thought. This would be also more than the line-haul for that load. I came up with a little less, and since all parties (at least on my end) are happy with it, I went for it. But thanks again for the quick reply.

    I ended up asking for $400, pushing $/mile rate up by $.87.

    Let's see what Harris Teeter has to say to this.

    Comparing those numbers, let's see what HT thinks :)

    I will let you guys know, and also have some ideas should this happen in the future.

    Would it be the Greensboro or Indian Trail HT warehouse?
    The one guard at Indian Trail is a pecker head!

    That is one tight company but with a ton of money backing them.
    I used to drive for them and know exactly how they can be.

    Yeah, figure a days revenue lost or, another planned load lost. But also consider if it's a real good customer that you don't want to p1$$ off.

    It will vary.

    You want to charge them enough to where you can cover the loses for that day, but you also don't want to lose a customer because you ticked them off. I'd say somewhere between $500-$700. If it's a good customer you don't want to lose, charge them around $500. If it's one you could care less about then go with $700.

    Detention pay is tax deductable to the person paying the bill.

    Well, in our case, we have only one truck and are a small family owned MC. Also, office and residence of the driver/company is in High Point, NC, about 6 miles away. And we had already a load booked for Friday.

    Bottom line: Driver dropped off truck at HT, went home, went fishing, is going back today at 22pm. In short, everyone was happy with the $400 I charged. The customer apologized and promised that it won't happen again :)

    It is good to know though that $500-$700 is an acceptable pay for an unscheduled day layover.

    it depends, if the driver was able to take a full mandatory rest period off between the time of the apt.'s, you can technically only charge them for the time the driver would not have been on his rest period. Hence, if they intentionally delayed you 24 hrs, you could reasonably bill them for 14 of that. Be advised, you'll probably loose the customer.

    Also, to add another note:

    If you were late, don't charge the customer detention. The same applies if you showed up early.
