FINALLY!! Got physical and med card, MVR, deposit, approved for WIA funding, CDL Manual (had that awhile now), and *most* things here at home ready for my girlfriend to be home alone all day all week with our one month old daughter.

Can't wait to start the hands-on learning part of this! Then lookin for work (shouldn't be too hard around here, lots of dumpers and semi traffic in the area)!

Thanks to all the info I've been reading here, I think I've got a good idea of what to expect and how to deal with it. Was an indie driver for a 3rd party delivery company haulin office supplies and pharmaceuticals, so have a pretty good idea about how the logistics works, but never did any Big Truck long-hauls, so I figure two sides of the same coin right?

Long haul is a helluva lot different. Especially when you have young children at home. It's going to be hard, especially when a problem arises at home and you're 1000mi. away. Little things like a flat tire or a leaking pipe, will leave you feeling helpless and your spouse feeling overwhelmed. Hopefully you have a reliable support system at home, family, or trusted friends you can call on when something happens. Plan for as much as you can and hope for the best is about all you can do. Good luck.

Cool man good luck my school starts on the 18th of next month :) I wish it were sooner as I am just sitting here waiting around. I am glad that I am not in the situation like most people where they need to have a job right away because they are taking their time to get us trained and out the door.

Z--fortunately we do have an awesome support group around us, the kind that are usually there before you hang up! But yeh, not lookin forward to bein a million miles away at all, but if it has to be done, then so be it. I would've started school last month, but due to limited absences allowed, and baby due the 25th, didn't want to risk missin too much school and havin to start over, figured get a month at home with them to get a 'schedule' of sorts established. It helps that the school is a local Vo-Tech about 45 minutes away "just in case" for the three months it's gonna take.
Hopefully can get local/regional work pretty quickly though, that would be nice.

NNG-- yeh, the waiting has been drivin me nuts! While I need good work sooner than later, we decided taking the time for school to get what will be my second 'career path' was worth the little bit of tight living now. But #### I can't wait for steady checks to start again!!

    zebcohobo Thanks this.

Congrats and best of luck to you!

I highly recommend you reconsider though. You are going to miss that little girl growing up and you will never get that time back. As a newbie you just don't realize how long you are going to be gone for. Then when you do get home its for a few days and back at it again. Man for you and your families sake please re-think this endeavor. Not being negative at all I just don't think you realize what this job is going to entail.
