Used to go through the BS often when picking up a loaded/dropped trailer that came out of CO....tandems slid all the way back....problem is....I'm taking this to CA!

40' king pin to center of rear tandem axle. No biggie if the load is empty plastic bottles weighing 6k....but a canned food, or beer load and weighing in at 45k (freight weight)....now I have a potential problem!

Candlewood you were mostly correct. i was ticketed for having them at 44 feet. 41 is the law in VA. he let me slide them to 41 feet but like i said, the initial cause for the stop was speeding.

i guess the guy had a heart as it was at the 151 going down the big hill southbound towards the scales on 81. like i said, it could have been worse. the speeding ticket would have been really bad.

i was just wondering if the ticket was something VA was starting to enforce, or like i think, he saw something else to write me up for and let me slide on the points for my CSA.

My wife hates to tell me I was mostly right...............

i was just wondering if the ticket was something VA was starting to enforce, or like i think, he saw something else to write me up for and let me slide on the points for my CSA.

My experience is that Virgina enforces all violations. Commercially they are seeking weight infractions, speed, axle positions (because they are "shorties") and the usual other stuff......

I think you got really lucky, the fine I saw for the axle violation was $250, you indicated that you could have been as much as 12 or 14 MPH over on speed, I haven't been cited for speed in years but I am pretty sure 12-14 over would be more than $250 in todays world.

I am sure that your attitude after being stopped had a lot to do with getting overlooked for speed in favor of the axle violation, YES, I think the officer "has a heart", almost all of them do, you have one as well, we all have a job to do, it just depends on how we get it done.

If you don't mind me asking, did you receive a state issued violation and a Roadside Inspection of any type, Level 1, 2 or 3 OR just a state issued violation.

Either way, it appears that you were cited for a non-moving violation, that is really "having a heart" Vs getting a inspection and having it noted about an axle violation, this counts toward your CSA2010 "points".

Violate a state or local ordinance or regulation: Level 1 (1 point)

1 point (times 3) = 3 points for this stop, again, this is really having a heart. I hope that I am stopped by this officer!!

As I recall, I81x150 is just south of Roanoke/Troutville, is an area watched closely by state troopers for all types of violators, commercial or otherwise, I suspect a good revenue generating area. That hill you speak of allows for speed build-up for me if I am near Gross, don't ask me why I know this.......................I wasn't 12 over the 60 mph limit but enough to warrant a look-see by the officer, he wished me a "nice day" after looking things over pretty good, I asked him for a Passed Level 3, said he was pressed for time but had time for a Level 1, I said I was pressed for time too, maybe next time, I wished him a nice day too and we parted company.

no roadside inspection at all. all i got was a virginia state uniform citation. the truck i have got a level 1 inspection in NY 2 months ago and the sticker is in the window. that might be why he did not fool with inspecting the truck.

and yes my reaction was oh snap................that fast...really? im sorry. i learned along time ago to treat those guys like humans who are just people who get out of bed and put their pants on one leg at a time like i do. being nice with them has gotten me out of a few should-a-been tickets in the personal car over the years as well. not to mention i personally know a Tennessee Trooper who told me that when he stops someone, he always approaches the car with a smile and a hello i am officer so and so and let me explain why i stopped you. your reaction to him usually dictates a warning vs a ticket for something minor.

when you get a roadside inspection, they tell you to turn it in to your company. he said nothing of the sort with this ticket. he explained the usual stuff, where the court was, where to call by what date and so on. i called them, and the citation is eligible for what they call a "prepay" meaning i can pay it on the internet, mail etc and not have to fool with court.

Still better notify your company about the ticket. Look up 383.31.

I would not be surprised if the non-moving violation on the axle ends up in a different government "pot" than a speeding ticket would have ended up. Anyone know?

My tandems have 4 inch spacing,x 5 holes =20 inches,so Im guessing Im at 42ft,king pin to axle group, illegal in maryland(41 foot max),and legal in virginia(43 ft max).
Going right back to cali position..cops suck!
