picked up a loaded trailer in Birmingham friday of 43' pipe stacked in a pyramid. Taking the load to texas tomorrow. Heard somewhere that pipe stakes are required by law in tx any time you are hauling pipe. Is this true?

I can't believe they are not on the load to begin with. I don't know about a law in Texas but you better use some common sense and get you a set. Some places won't unload you if you don't have them on the trailer. You can get yourself or others killed if you don't have set on their and go to unchain the load.

I agree with Big John....where in hell are the stakes???? Pipe or rectangle steel stakes should be used when loading and left on the load.

Or is the pipe large diameter that is loaded on cut bunks made for that size of pipe?????

Well I always did because I had a aluminum trailer and didn't want to break my stake pockets but if it was me I would do it on all trailers.

This, I don't haul pipe and thus not sure about our laws concerning it but stakes just make sense...especially when it comes time to unload.

Required by law to chain them regardless of the trailer type. Otherwise you can get busted for unsecured cargo. Bungees don't count, btw...they're not load rated by DOT.

Pipe stakes will slow a load down if it goes, but it's never going to prevent someone from getting killed with pipe. Some places won't load without them, but I've also had places refuse to allow me to set them up on the trailer. Make sure you use anchored belly wraps.

I have hauled a lot of pipe and Have 2 sets (4 stakes in a set) 1 set is 4ft for most pipe loads and then a 6 ft set for hauling telephone poles. Yes they must be chained across the deck. Plus you better use gut wraps on multiple layers (using dunnage in between layers) unless you are pyramidded in which you better have anchored belly bands. Make sure that the pipe stakes are covered with something (wood, rubber, plastic) as most places dont want the steel to steel contact to the pipe.
