I am running 12ga wiring with my Cobra 29/RFX-75 due to the same reason.. Well sorta.. The batteries are under the catwalk and I am not running long wires like this from the catwalk to inside the dash... I find I get some RF noise with the cig lighter in my speaker it due to the extra power I guess.... But you gotta do what you gotta do....

I am thinking about switching my cig lighter and running the wires under the dash where my company radio is wired to.. In the Freightliner FLD daycab they have a power bar so to speak (a bunch of spots for power wires going to different various things).. So I am gonna give this a shot and see if it will get rid of the noise...

Check to see if you have somewhere under the cash to wire in... It's closer then the battery (still in the within the cab) and easier to do... Or like I am doing right not the cig lighter is really easy but it could't get you some RF noise...

Don't know what kind of truck you are talking about, but find the fuse panel. There might me a about a 6 or 4 gauge hot wire to the fuse panel that you could stealthily run a wire to. I would probably wait till after my probation period is over before I did this.:biggrin_25524:

jcash, do you know how many amps your radio draws? A typical cig lighter is good for 20 amps. Not that I recommend this (I don't) but in a pinch if you knew your radio didn't draw any more than 20 amps during modulation, it might work.

The fuse panel is another idea. Try to find a 20 amp accessory port if at all possible.

That's a good question. Does anyone know how many amp a 29 with the RFX-75 draws?

Well I am using my radio with the cigarette lighter rather then wired to battery... The bigger power wire you need would have a 10amp fuse for power and the negative wire has a 5amp fuse.. This is what is recommended when I checked out online for the RFX setup...

I notice that if my lights on the dimmer are turned down lower when I key up the channel light disappears and the other lights dim down.. When the dimmer switch is all the way up or more then half way it doesn't look like it is affecting the lights (the lights stay lit up and the channel light is still bright on key up)... It seems to be working perfectly fine and I haven't popped any fuses....

Now I know it would be better if it was hooked up to the battery and it's possible that the lights would not dim on the radio at all.. It's just not something I want to get into with a company truck.. I mean I could run the wire to power panel under the dash which isn't as big of a deal as running to the battery but I still think the cig lighter is easier and works.. Plus I think I should be getting a new F-Liner Cornado so once I switch my CB over to that truck I might think about wiring it up to the battery since I know once I am in that truck I will be in it for a very long time...

The only thing that has changed was my antenna light comes on now when I key up and start talking.. I think this just has to do with the fact that it needs to be re-calibrated for the extra power the RFX provides... Cause the antennas were already calibrated prior to the RFX and I didn't get a antenna light come on before.. I called the guy at the radio shop and he said that antenna's are calibrated to the truck so if they were fine on the meter prior to the RFX then they are still fine cause they are not calibrated to the power of the radio rather the positioning of the antenna's on the truck...

I haven't checked to see how many amps the radio draws....
