Would you replace your diesel engine for a more efficient turbine engine?

actually the turbine requires no real warm up time( i think) but hot starts kill them. try driving a diesel away with 0 warmup time and put it straight under full load, almost guaranty you scuffed pistons and liners. the turbine is naturally aspirated so it loses power as altitude increases where a turbocharged diesel holds it power as you go higher. turbines are also aircooled which makes them simpler, but also loses power and efficiency in hot ambient temps

We use gas turbines in the Navy. For main propulsion, generators and fire pumps. Within 5 seconds of flashing up a GT generator, it can be put on full load. Like 1000kw load. Exhaust stack temp is around 9-1200 and fuel consumption is depending on the load, up to a gallon a MINUTE. They have to be shut down every 100 hours for a water/detergent wash and 200 for a Hot Section Inspection. You thought your turbo was expensive? Blow a gear driven fuel pump in a GT, 15K MIGHT cover it.

I spent the first 10 years of my career in the Canadian Artillery and the last 13 as a Marine Engineer Mechanic. Now i'm going for my Class 1 ;-)

and even worse trucks run at part load most of the time, Gas Turbines fuel consumption is nearly as high at part load as at full. reciprocating engines fuel consumption actually decreases as load drops off

Correct Sir, they also perform best at 100% load (they don't like to idle)

Truth is ford and others who tried turbines in any sort of road vehicle BACK IN THE 50's quickly realized that it was totally unsuited for the application. While they have been fine tuned a bit since nothing has really changed at all to make them suitable now.

I know one thing- you can cook food on the exhaust of an idling turbine. That's useful in the middle of summer, when it's 120 degrees outside, Eh?

They might start yielding to the right of way or at least look first.

Many of these engines can match the power output of today's diesel engines and are more efficient, not to mention better for the environment.

My question to you is are you certain gasoline in better for the environment.
you better do some more research to back up this.
for example look at the ratio of trucks vs passenger vehicles on the road today and then tell me that gas is better.

he is not talking about a gasoline engine, he is talking about a GAS TURBINE aka JET engine. like a turbo prop aircraft. and no they are not fuel efficient especially when run under widely varying load c onditions
