Currently trying to decipher paystub.... my husband is contract driving for an owner....who is withholding miles? ... some strange percentage of total miles... ie: 2,474 miles... withholding 49.48. Also, a withholding called OAI??? Same amount every week... $40.40. Does anyone have an idea what these are for? Can't ask the boss... not allowed to call him. : / THANK YOU..

I can't answer your question. Ask your husband. If he doesn't know HE can call the boss and find out. And WHY are you not allowed to call the boss? If you are doing the hubby's books, it is a legitimate call for a legitimate question.

Frankly, when I drove for Knight, my wife was on the phone to the payroll department at least once a week because of something stupid they had done or not done.

OAI is most likely Occupational Accident Insurance, Its sorta like workerscomp for contract drivers. As far as the mileage withholding, if he can't call the boss, can he at least call the bosses secretary? Did he sign a contract, if so, it should state in the contract what the fees are and what they are for.

All my contract drivers have to sign off on the OAI, $33.00 weekly. Any other deductions also have to be signed off before we can withhold them.

Well the way I read the OP was that it was the driver's wife that was not allowed to call. But she did not make it clear WHO was not allowing her to call. It really does not seem to make a lot of sense, at least to me.

The above post is correct in my opinion. OAI is Occupational Accident Insurance and is a substitute for Workmen's Comp. Many states require it and some allow you to acquire a waiver. Many shippers and recievers require it too.

The mystery deduction is 0.02 per mile and is probably an escrow account of some kind to cover damages or losses caused by the driver. It will probably be deducted until a certain amount is in the account. While I don't agree with this procedure it is commonly practiced.

I can't imagine that all this wasn't covered with your husband during the hiring process.

If her husband is anything like my husband...money stuff goes in one ear and out the other. He never remembers it, and then he gets to sound like an idiot as I ask he questions he has to turn around and ask someone else.

Does he own his own truck or lease? Or is this one of the situations where an employee is legally manipulated as a contract employee to avoid paying benefits??

sorta looks like it. (of all the ignorant...........) why this old sceme still prevails. if the boss tells you what to do, and has control over you, you ain't self employed, you simply have decided to pay your own social security tax because you are a nice guy.

had a boss try to do that to me once. he made all the right arguments while i listened. after his carefully prepared 10 minute speech, i smiled and said " i know you keep good track of figures, so tell me, about how many miles did i drive for you last year"? he replied, "as i remember it was about 149,000". i pointed across the street to the terminal of the competition and said " how many miles you reckon i'll drive for those guys next year"?

he changed the subject. i stayed with him for 6 years after that until he passed away. we never changed our system.

I didn't want to jump the gun, because she didn't really say. Though those jobs tend to be more enjoyable. But it's done at a sacrifice. Them benefits mean alot. Employers can spend $700 a month or more matching 401K's and paying part of health insurance policies. Not to mention matching social security and paying workers comp. People get sick and people retire.

    It's all one's choice. I know which route I like. :)
