Why so many newer trucks coming from the factory with weed burner exhaust instead of stacks? I have seen a lot of this recently and on 2 seperate occassions have had to move to another spot because of it. i personally think this style of exhaust is very dangerous to other drivers in a tight truck stop when the truck is idling. Just curious why these dangerous things are becoming more common.

this type of exaust is widly used in europe and no fire problems. The only thing must be ok - spark catcher inside muffler. exaust of european truck is too cold to burn weed and belive ne - no oxygen in exaust

A verticle stack can collect rain, grass burners will only collect rain in deep puddles.
( on the anti pollution note, not saying I promote such views ) If everyone had APU's people would not need to idle.
Also with grass burners trailers no longer have exhaust stains. -
It's slightly lighter, obviously. Important for people getting paid by pounds.
Also flatbedders hauling plastic pipes don't have to use smoke tarps.
I don't have APU and I like to idle when it's super hot or cold. So I'll stick to regular stacks. -
When I worked for Stevens, that's what our trucks had.

I can see that it is lighter and all but still they are so annoying! What if your idling your truck at night and your truck starts to regen. That has to smell pretty bad when your trying to sleep.
One cool thing I saw that I would do if I owned a truck and had an APU on it, the exhaust for the APU was routed into the exhaust stack on the truck. Small little chrome pipe welded right into the stack. Pretty cool and an AWESOME idea in my eyes. Makes it quieter and there is no fumes down low, they all go out the top of the stack. -
Weight is the answer to this question. We bought 12 new Petes with weed burners. A single stack would have added a hair over 400 lbs. Add that to the additional weight from the regen equipment and it's over 1000 lbs. And now on our new trucks that have the DEF equipment too. Stacks look nice but can't be justified anymore. Expect this trend to continue among fleets.
We recognize the issue you're bringing up. I will say that our trucks cannot idle for extended times to save fuel and lessen the chance that fumes will build up. We do this by using espar heaters for cold weather use, and the settings on the engine don't allow it to idle if the temperature is between 20 and 85 degrees. -
See mine can idle whenever how ever much I just dont because its as easy as buying a 15 dollar fan in the truck stop for the summer and having a nice warm blanket or 2 for the winter.

85 degrees outside can get awfully hot inside when you're trying to sleep...especially when your poor driver is someplace where leaving the windows open enough for airflow is problematic at best, dangerous at worst. Just sayin'.

Just get some breezeway screens.
