Howdy everybody!
After 25+ years as an auto mechanic, I have decided to get out of the business and into trucking.
I moved from the Bay Area to Modesto a couple years ago, and being a mechanic here is just not happening.
My short term goal is to take the longest, most thorough training class I can find.
My long term goal is to be a great professional in this industry and get the job done....and maybe earn a real paycheck, as opposed to the peanuts I have busted my knuckles for for way too long.
I want to go at this 100%, and for the rest of my life if I can.
Since I have no wife, kids, or anything else but time on my hands, it seems that OTR would be right for me at some point...maybe?
Again, I know nothing of this industry other than it just seems to feel right at this point.
I hope to learn a lot from my classes, as well on this forum.
Hope to converse with all of you from time to time.
Anxious to hear from anybody else that has changed careers or went into trucking at a later age.
How is it working out for you?
Thanks for reading.
Changing careers at 48.

Just keep your expectations reasonable, don't believe everything everyone tells you, understand trucking is not a glamorous job, you'll see a lot, if not all of the nation, and it's not all "pretty". You'll question your decision at least a dozen time a month, but the rest of the time you'll enjoy the solitude and scenery.
If patience is not a strong virtue of yours or if you tend to have issues with anger management, DO NOT get into trucking. If you have a wife or girl-friend, be prepared to have this relationship challenged. Know that there is no "perfect" carrier to work for. The best you can hope for is to find one where you fit in well. Try and keep your first job a minimum of 9 months.
You will never become a "trucking master" ... not in 1 year, not in 30 years, so never begin to think you are almost there, because you will then soon fail miserably. Listen and observe more than you talk. Learn from your (and other's) mistakes and you should do fine. Most of the time you are your own boss, but there will be times each week when you will feel like you are being "managed" by a marine drill instructor as you work for "free", correct other's mistakes, take the heat for other's shortcomings, etc.
You'll find a lot of mid/later life career changers into trucking out there. Some happy, some not so happy. It's all in what you want to make of it, your determination, your motivation, and your expectation. How those blend together will determine how long you remain, or how far you go, or happy/miserable you become.Last edited: Oct 8, 2011
Jamming Gears, NEWEST NEWBY, jet460 and 5 others Thank this. -
No wife and kids is a huge plus. As long as you don't have a social life either then you'll really have something going.
jet460 Thanks this. -
Go for it! If you've been in auto mechanics for years, then it won't be nearly as difficult a change as someone coming out of a cubicle.
You may regret being a trucker, but you'll never regret trying it out.jet460 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the solid advice.
Well taken for sure.
Having been a mechanic for most of my life, I understand entirely that no job is glamorous, and to keep my expectations realistic.
After years of wrenching I still don't feel like I am even close to knowing everything.
I'm sure the same is true for trucking. -
No life at all...haha..my boat is my wife and she only lets me take her out a few times in the summer.

I see 460 in your sig.ford ? if so that is a expensive way to make power.

Plus I spent a while in a 24' RV and drove a Snap On truck for a while, so I have a tiny bit of experience driving something bigger than a Honda. Loved it! The view was nice...

It sucks gas. About 10 gallons per hour.
Most fun I have ever had with my clothes on.
