Well, like other posters on these boards, I have the age-old problem of a dui on my record (acquired in personal vehicle not truck). It's about 13 months old. My fines are paid, no probation, CDL reinstated. I maintain hazmat, doubles/triples, and tanker endorsements. I also have a TWIC card. I know the larger companies will not even cast a cursory glance in my direction, much less entertain an application. Does anyone know of any owner/operators or small companies in the Birmingham, AL, area that will hire a conscientious driver that hasn't had a ticket or accident in over 10 years with the exception of the aforementioned dui? Any help would be useful. I am willing to travel and be OTR if necessary.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Common problem... Help!

I hate to be the one to say it first but with only 2 years exprience and a DUI and in todays economy (plenty of driver's without a DUI looking for a job) you're gonna be hard pressed to find anyone who's willing to pay the enormous insurance premium to cover you as a driver. Most companies will only take a driver if it's 10 years since DUI. Maybe a few at the 5 year mark but definitely not 13 months. A large carrier thats self insured would be your best bet but even then they're gonna be 5 or 10 years. Sorry but you may need to find another career. Good luck either way

While I can't offer any suggestions for companies in AL that will hire someone with a recent DUI, I disagree with many of TennMan's assertions. We will hire a driver with a recent DUI. We are a small company with an outstanding safety record. Our insurance company is willing to cut us a little slack due to our excellent track record. We understand that a poor decision in your personal vehicle does not necessarily mean you are an unsafe truck driver. We have gottern some great drivers this way. I believe insurance companies will either cover a driver or not...they do not charge additional premiums for drivers with DUI. Good luck in your search.

Excellent remarks cpape!
I believe that it truly does come down to the carrier's relationship and claims history with their insurance company. Obviously you folks have done a good job in hiring and for that reason your insurer doesn't penalize you when you go outside what many would consider the norm. -
Best Advise I can offer?, try a smaller caompany, or maybe even an O/O looking for a driver or team driver,Best of luck, just hope this will be a learning expierence for you, Nothing wrong with going out for a drink or two, but if you plan on drinking, plan on a designated driver

Thanks guys. I actually have 4 years of experience. The computer shows it as being 2 (need to update that stat). The dui was a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for the extreme lapse in judgment. I would be an asset to any company that is willing to take a chance on me. As for having a "drink or two", as of Oct. 10, I will not have had a single drink in 6 months. It's not worth the remote possibility that history can repeat itself. I might change gears a little but I am not changing careers. My work ethic and tenacity in general will not allow me to give up my hopes of getting back on the road doing what I love to do.

wait !! how do you know in the computer about the experience , where can you ind that?
