I had heard that they charge you for every thing, but was not sure if it was true! I pay for nothing...except two locks when I started.

I have always taken care of the company I work for equipment probably better than I would my own just because they are intrusting me with it and I want to do a good job for them! -

This is an interesting thread, but there are several things that need to be addressed. This is the only instance where I have ever heard of an open deck company requiring drivers to have their own chains and binders. They will not be of any use to you going forward, unless you decide to buy your own truck. No other company that I am aware of requires company drivers to own their own equipment. In addition, your equipment will wear out. Prime is reaping the benefit of your equipment (higher rates for flatbed loads). You will end up with a bunch of junk equipement and you were not collecting a premium rate for owning/using it. .36/mi is not a premium rate.
Open deck trucking is not necessarily tied to the economy in general or housing specifically. In fact, it often moves in different directions all together. For example, my company will have one of the best years in our 50+ year history despite the poor economy. Many of our customers serve the agricultural community. In addition, people willing and able to do flatbed work are in far shorter supply than those willing/able to pull van trailers. If you are open to some hard work, I would suggest making this decision. You will have many career options open to you.
JimTheHut drives for Maverick. I believe you have to have your CDL before going there, but I don't think they require experience. I believe TMC would be similar. Both would offer more home time than once every 4-6 weeks. Once you have a year of experience, there is no reason you should not make .40-.45/mi pulling open deck equipment, and be home every 10 days unless you want to be gone longer.
Although NoTarps is a little abrasive, and probably doesn't like Prime, he is pretty much correct in his assessment of this policy. You are referring to him as a troll. Wouldn't you rather have all the information you can get? Or did you just want someone to congratulate you on your choice to work for Prime and tell you how awesome you and your company are?
I am not affiliated with any of the companies mentioned in my post or any other. I am a believer in information. New drivers should know what things are like elsewhere in the industry. In this case, I have to say you are being taken advantage of.notarps4me and The Challenger Thank this.
