That's what I ran into. The meds I was taking were schedule 4 and 5. I know the recruiters are really really busy but they should have some sort of protocol to refer you to their medical section for pre-screening. I don't know if HIPPA would prevent the recruiters from dealing with that. I drove up for orientation a week before class start and listed the stuff on my app. I would have thought someone would have screened that and give me a call on what they wanted or needed. A half day over at the VA would have taken care of it. Just does not seem to be very good communication there.

Sorry to hear that. Fortunately, I live in the area so didn't loose much. I was on hydrocodone and gabapentin. They wanted a note from the doctor that I was off of them. They further stated that motrin or naproxen were acceptable. I'm actually using prescription motrin now that VA supplies. Everything is clear from my system now so I am good to go and don't have to list it.

I am in the process of composing a letter to Stevens expressing my concerns about the issue and some suggestions on how to fix it. We'll just have to see.

Well, I had no problem passing my DOT physical with those meds. And my driving school had no problem with them. No one at Stevens ever made any mention of meds possibly being a problem...they never even asked if I was on any. So it never occurred to me that it could even be an issue until I started reading some of the posts on here.
My flight leaves in 3 days, and if I had waited until the last minute to book my flight, I couldn't have gotten one for less than Stevens $200 reimbursement limit.
I guess I should have found these boards sooner.

Hey guys!!!! I have aquestion???? what are the reasons or things to disqualify you from going to tranning for Stevens?????? for example: is it for drugs, medication, because you dont know how to drive, is it because you have to pay child support, etc, etc, etc....... Thanks to anyone of answering my question......

Well, lets see. The most common reason for a candidate being sent home is failure of drug test. (illegal drugs)
The rest of the reasons combined don't match that one.
Other reasons include blood pressure too high (uncontrolled hypertension). Max limit for Stevens is 139/89.
Physical limitations that preclude you from performing the job. This sounds vague, but the most common physical limitation is girth. If you are so large you cannot fit under a truck to check the slack adjusters, if you are physically so limited you cannot climb in and out of a trailer, under the trailer or climb into and out of the upper bunk, you will fail.
If your eyesight (corrected) is worse than 20-50, or if you fail your hearing test (I pass so anyone can pass!), you will fail.
If you have certain medical conditions that might lend a problem, you will fail. If you take certain drugs, you will not qualify.

the best thing, if you take ANY prescription, is to qualify it thru your recruiter before progressing any further.

Other reasons for being sent home is dishonesty. If you fail to list a prescription that may be for a serious condition (diabetes, for example) or a surgery, even if 30 years ago, is considered dishonesty. Even tho you may qualify otherwise, this may get you sent home.

List EVERY surgery, every broken bone, everything. 99.9% of the time, it won't be a problem. But failure to disclose it, may be.
They are not looking for a reason to send you home, but they are looking for a reason you may not qualify for the job.
An example is a torn rotator cuff. If you had surgery and had it fixed, they simply check your range of motion and ability to lift simple weight. ( I think I had to hold five pounds at arm's length for one minute).
If you fail to disclose this, their thought is, "hmmm...may be a problem here".
If there is ANYTHING you think might be considered, ask your recruiter. They'll get an answer for you.

Stevens doesn't care about child support, but be aware that if you're behind and listed as a 'deadbeat' parent, the state has the right to lift your professional license until you're caught up. Some states are more aggressive about this than others. If you are behind, get with the agency office than handles this (usually the DA) and put together a payment plan to head off the problem.
Stevens only cares about it if you may lose your license.
As for driving? You have to be pretty bad to not qualify. Stevens TRAINS new drivers. As long as you can pass your orientation skills test, you will go out with a trainer. This means the basics. I don't recall anyone that has failed that test in the last couple years.

One other thing that will disqualify you is failure to disclose a citation or license suspension. I have seen otherwise qualified drivers sent home because they failed to disclose a ticket from 5 years ago, such as speeding or suspension for failure to provide insurance. These are not disqualifying by themselves, but if you fail to disclose them, they look at it as dishonesty.
Go down to your DMV and get your 10 year record. Probably cost you a buck or two. This is what Stevens will look at. In California, it's called an H-10. Don't know about other states.

Question for you seasoned Stevens drivers. Is there a way to prevent the school or red shirts from taking your truck and using it? Wouldn't be that big of a deal but I've walked the yard and across the street 4 times, asked school and red shirts. No one has seen it. Went across the street for the 3rd time and asked Ed. He hadn't seen it. Then I walk towards the corner and found it hidden behind some trailers. wouldnt be bad if someone could just tell me where it is, but nooooo...
