    First off-I am not a spokesman/recruiter for them nor do I get anything out of passing on this information. I am simply a student who knows there are others out there trying to get their CDLs without having to sell their souls to the company store. I have seen a few postings from others in Texas seeking Truck Driver School tuition assistance. If you are eligible for the Hazelwood Act you can use this for the driving school at Grayson County College in Denison, Tx. The Hazelwood pays for all but $750 tuition. The DOT physical, DMV testing and Hazmat background check comes to about $250. For a grand you can have your CDL-A with all your endorsements and OWE NO TRUCKING COMPANY A THING!!! This place is no fly-by-night joint. The father/son duo running the place have about 60 years combined experience and also had their own company before opening the school. It's a 4 week program with classroom and driving time. We are currently learning on late 90's Peterbilt 10 speeds. Paper logs are also taught. They work with you to ensure you get everything you need to pass your driving and written tests. Several recruiters do come out to the school over the 4 weeks and give you their pitch. There is no obligation to sign with anyone. The classes are kept to about a 3-5 to 1 student/instructor ratio. We have 7 students and 2 instructors now and the last group had 11 and 3. The following information is from the Texas Veterans Commission--
    Who qualifies?

    Effective with the fall 2009 term/semester, in order to be eligible to receive a Hazlewood Act Exemption, a Veteran must:
    • Have been a Texas resident upon entry into the military, entered into active federal duty in the State of Texas, or declared Texas as his or her home of record at the time of entry into the armed forces as documented on his or her DD Form 214;
    • Have a military discharge of honorable or general, under honorable conditions;
    • Served at least 181 days of active duty service (excluding training);
    • Not be in default on an education loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas and not in default on a federal loan if that default is the reason the student cannot use his or her federal veterans’ benefits
    Contact Gary Sr or Jr at-Grayson County College Truck Driving School

    Are you driving that round trip every day from Rowlett to Denison or have living arrangements closer?

    I have attended classes at Grayson County College in the past. Live somewhat farther out now.

    Driving each day. I, too, attended and actually graduated from GCC with a degree about 15 years ago. That's one of the reasons I chose this driving school, knowing GCC wouldn't keep a half*** school around.

    Happy trails.

    Patt52 Thanks this.
