I just wanted to thank everyone for their comments. Just passed my CDL tests yesterday and got the final HazMat today (already had the tanker endorsement) so I'm ready to go. I just wanted to get more info about pay scales out there. I will say that the company I was talking about in my first post is Schneider and I read the very strong post from BigJohn about them. Now I don't know anything about these companies in the area, so I'm not saying anything for or against them or anyone else. The recruiter I've been talking to says the job will be about 60k a year. I will be paid 220 each day, which can be 12-14 hours, and have to work 6 days a week every other week. After reading BigJohn's and some others posts, I wanted to find out if this is reasonable or could I get better by going out there and spending some time going to companies out there. Plus I'm not interested in doing a lot of job jumping, I'd like to find a company to stay with at least a couple of years. This has been a HUGE career move for me and I'd like to be starting it off right.
Thanks again to everyone for their posts.

Jvar,
That O/O was driving under his own authority and should definitely be able to report your employment, shouldn't he? That and 1099s should give verification of employment. If I'm mistaken, set me straight.
Happy trails.jvar4001 Thanks this. -
Stick with a firm for awhile. You chose it for a good reason, so stay at least six months (unless you get !@#$ed around or your safety is in jeopardy). Trucking firms don't like to see too many firms on your resume... even if you get a rotten dispatcher/late paychecks, try to stick your first CDL job out to six months, and then other firms will look at you seriously and you can move up.
Again, way to go. -

I'm heading to Texas in about a week to start applying to companies to drive for them. I've seen the odessa/midland area mentioned as a good area to start at, does anyone have any other suggestions ?
Thanks -

Along with Midland/Odessa, look in the San Antonio--Corpus Christi--Victoria areas. That is the Eagle Ford shale oil and gas play. Look at eaglefordshaleblog dot com to see what's up. Check the news papers in those towns...maybe Craigslist for ideas. I noticed Missouri Basin Well Services are running ads in that area.
There is also Fort Worth and Decatur.
Look at the first post in this thread for company names and also add Nabors Well Services and Stallion. Most of them are probably all in the same areas.
That should keep you busy for a while. Report back -
I had to put things on hold for a few, as my wife has been real sick. The Dr.'s think it may be ulcers. Was not going to leave my wife's side until I saw improvement in her condition. She will not be coming with me for awhile. We plan on moving to Texas eventually, WHEN things work out. She is a 20 yr veteran of Wally World, so she can go just about anywhere. Hoping she can retire in a year or two. Well, sorry for the rambling. I know there a guys and gals curious about some of us that are venturing down there in the oil patch. I will keep you all up to date on the findings of jobs ect. We are going to venture down there in a couple of weeks and do some face to face contacting as the phone, emails and craigs list are useless. However craigs list is a good place to gather names for contacting. Have a great day and be safe.
