I'm very happy but I'm oilfield and no longer otr. Had otr pay been even close to what I make out here I'd still be doing it because I enjoyed it. I don't work for fun though, I work for money and there was well over double to be made doing what I do now.

Truthfully I have not been this content in years.. Love what I do, even when things get trying. Like now I am waiting at a receiver till tomorrow.. Got here too dang early... they can't 'fit me in' :biggrin_2552:

Been dedicated to Kraft now since feburary and making more money, than if I was just a plain company driver...

Thanks for the input guys/gals. I'm going to start school in Jan. I want to avoid winter driving while I'm a rookie. I need to make this work, and with everyones input, I feel like I can do this.

Some of you mentioned avoiding the mega carriers. That sounds great to me. What resources would you suggest as far as finding these opportunities? I look at indeed.com and craiglist, but don't know of any others.

    Thanks, I appreciate it.

I am very happy out here. I like being in different places every day, traveling down the road and looking at all the beauty around me, and being alone. The only person in my life is my 18yo son and I love it that way. I'm out for 4 weeks and then home for 4 days.

AVOID CRAIGSLIST LIKE THE PLAUGE......just like the mega carriers recruit and actively try to fill seats for a reason, and the better companies don'thave to recruit and fill seats by word of mouth and referral, the guys on craigslist are there because they can't get help anywhere else......I've not met ONE person who answered a craigslist driving ad that didn't get screwed in some way

as far as the local or somewhat local companies go, check your phone book or go to the local truckstops and ask around to see what smaller companies are in your area.......as well as asking the schools you're checking out who they are affiliated with as far as hiring and if they have smaller, more local companies recruiting from them......that was one of the atttractions of the school I went to.....there were several smaller companies within about 50 miles of my home that recruited from there.....

Craigslist is GREAT!:biggrin_2558: My dad found his NASCAR driving job on there.....there are plenty of good jobs, you just have to wade through the crap to find them.

yeah I guess everyone gets lucky once in awhile on craigslist lol......

but the majority of the jobs on there are for sure complete bs or ripoffs

I checked into a few of them when I was looking and could tell right from the first phone call they were scams or bs companies......and have talked to quite a few guys that went with those craigslist deals and it didn't work out so well for them.....

a guess the moral to the story is every once in awhile it works out and buyer beware hahahaha

not many newbies get a new truck and home every weekend either, but I did.....so I guess anything is possible

Go be a hostler (after you get your cdl) from a food service place like FSA, Sysco, Sygma... then drive for them after a couple of years. My neighbor makes 80-90K doing that.

Hey Flyingmusician! You will get a real kick out of this. I found an ad on craigslist back in March of this year and thought I'd give em a call. I called the number and talked to the recruiter and she was a really nice Lady. Her name was Melissa Davis. I got hired and went to work for them and it worked out really well until I found a better company a couple of months ago that pays better and home for a full weekend. You will never guess which company hired me from that ad on craigslist. Well here you go! It was your beloved "EPES TRANSPORT"! So you see, not all ads on craigslist is a ripoff! Just sayin!
