The NTSB is working on banning cell phones from truck drivers. While I am not yet one of the anointed, I still find this to be absolutely insane.

Truck drivers can use their cell for so much more than just chatting. The way I understand it, a cell can be a very powerful tool for a driver.

I wanted to pass this along to the vets and the newcomers alike. I feel that you guys need to really look into this and voice your opinions.

I have to say that I feel if it's gotten this far into the news, it's not old for the NTSB and have been working on it for a while.

See,hands free is just to hard for most of the hard headed ones,,,it takes but one accident of this magnitude(and countless other ones) to ruin it for the literal millions of us who do it right

Very true. I am not trying to undermine the seriousness of the people involved in the linked crash, but this is one of the only documented cases.

I think I read somewhere that about 2,600 car fatalities are reported each year because of cell phones.

It's not just cell phones; it's the newspaper, that breakfast bagel, that new CD you need to listen to.

On the related subject, I think I remember hearing from a driver friend who said that the government was trying to ban smoking in commercial vehicles, as those vehicles could be considered a place of business. Has this even pushed any further than just discussion?

We have a cell phone ban up here in Canada in my state. It's called a "distracted driving" law which also stops you from eating, reading and using GPS. It's a good idea in theory but practic people still don't want to conform. Hands free headsets are allowed.

Well, no, but they can certainly push the subject and put their subjective spins on them, yes?

I felt that this subject was best ripped open for drivers everywhere to protest and speak about.

Far more disturbing than the original topic however, is this:

It's only in place for provincially regulated carriers. If the carrier is federally regulated, then it is not mandatory to not smoke in your vehicles... one of the last things I just learned in training.

I remember back when there were NO cell phones. What did drivers do back then? Yeap they stopped to make a call. Why should it be different now?

I see way too many drivers swerving around in heavy traffic while they try to talk on their cell phones, hands free or not. Too many drivers get way too caught up in conversations on the phone to were they are not paying 100% of their attention to what is going on on the road around them.
