Advice as to if there's any way to talk to truckers other than a CB? Heading back home, CA, toward the end of the week. Looking for chatter to help keep me awake during some of the longer stretches. Thank You!

Nope unless you give out your cell number and you better be a hot chic whose a big flirt even then your gonna get alot of sexual offers. CB is the only way and you can stay somewhat anonymous provided you don't give out your vehicle.

Thank you TennMan for info. and taking the time to reply : ) Probably TMI following but... here goes and I welcome all input, feedback, or feel free, if it's the best option, to just tell me "break down and install a cb!".
I'm 55, consider myself past my prime looks phase (though I had some uncomfortable moments at gas plazas a couple times on the trip out...), and traveling alone. I had the luxury of a semi "escort" for several hours a couple of weeks ago as I was traveling through TN & GA, I was on my way to FL after visiting family in IN. ("escort" probably had something to do with I'm driving a BMW with CA plates? oh, and it was dark!...) ANYWAY, I was fighting staying awake and he/she started running about 80mph and tucked me in behind. I'm forever grateful to that red semi, kept me awake and safe that night. Got me thinking that that would be a great way to travel the upcoming 6 days? I'll gladly buy some meals along the way for "escorts", info. as to road conditions and best, safest, places to stay along the route. Am I being naive thinking there are mostly good people in this world, it's just that the "bad apples" get more press time? Thx again TennMan!

Here's some advice which should help: try not to depend too much on caffiene or sugar to keep you awake. sure, they work; but, when the effects wear off, you'll probably "crash" pretty hard. Instead, use the following tricks:
- Every 3 hours or so pull over somewhere safe, get out of the vehicle and stretch your legs a bit. you can walk around, splash some water on your face, whatever. Spending too long behind the wheel without a break can lull you into sleep.
- If you're really having a tough time staying awake, pull over in a safe spot and take about a 30 min to 1 hr nap. You'd be surprised at how that will refresh you for a few more hours.
- It needs to be said - there is ABSOLUTELY NO SUBSTITUTE for a good 8 hrs of rest. None. Not caffiene, not energy drinks (which are poison anyway). Do that and you'll be able to cover some serious distance before Mr Sandman comes knocking, guaranteed.
I know these tips help me stay out of the ditch when I'm on the road. They might work for you, too. -
Well i'll say the best way to communicate without insinuating more maybe to by a hand held CB there about 40 at walmart and will be ok for what you'll be doing. as far as stopping and tajking a break for 30 to 60 minutes thats good advice however being a lady and traveling in a car i'd say just go ahead and get a room and stay the night theworse times to be on the road period are between 1am and 6am if i were you i'd drive from about 7 am til about 9pm. you should be able to drive 500-600 miles in that time frame comfortably. i imagine your going the southern route and will have plenty of time to make it in 6 days.
