I started a CDL class last September 25th 2011 which runs about 4wks. Now my over all goal wasn't to drive semi tractors, or to do oilfield Hotshot driving. I wanted to buy a few acres of land and pay for my home cash. I started researching areas 1year ago and came up with North Dakota or Texas as a great place. Now being a Midwesterner myself; hailing from Northern Ill borderline with WI, I know about the cold and hot extremes. I just have to get some where close to a big city for the family. They are all city slickers and don’t know much about the country side a farm or things of that nature.
Then I run across the oil field jobs and say wow! I can get a CDL and be a oilfield driver make good money and have what I want. I run across this form which is a blessing; through city data N Dakota forums. My father drove trucks back in the 80’s so I know about the Over the Road stuff and don’t want to do that all. No stomach for the asphalt running unless I go O/O which that time may come.

I accomplished a lot it would seem in a short time. General Knowledge, Air, Tankers, Doubles/ Triples, and have done my finger printing for Hazmat on Friday. I’m a former USS Abe Lincoln CVN 72 shipmate and would like to express my thanks for all the information here on these forums for newbie’s like myself to read. I even learned a new phrase here. “Lot Lizard” OMG ROFL!
I see the postings and I believe it to be true; but can a New Person really expect a 60K to 80K a year job in the oilfields hauling fuel, sand, water or other things for the oil industry?

    Thank You

PS If your wondering; I’m coming from the Service Industry Sales dept of 10 years I’m only 34 now....

I just got out of oilfield driving (not willingly) I was hauling crude for a big company with the initials CP. I made about 5k a month doing so. And thats seemed to be about industry standard, some make more some less.

80k plus is possible, with the right company.

But you will EARN every penny of it.

You can definitely make that much in the oil field but you can't be even remotely lazy. It's what I do for a living and it's not the kind of work you will want to do if you're a steering wheel holding dock bumper who only leaves his truck for the buffet. I tried otr but the pay was low and you just sit in a seat all day, the monotony drove me nuts. Out here you're in and out of the truck all day actually working and making double or more money than newer otr drivers. Can't beat it.

I couldn't just sit in a truck all day myself; your comments confirm that this would be the right course of action. That's the reason otr isn't for me. Thank you

Not an expert on the oilfields. I will tell you that there is a reason they pay a lot more! I personally would much rather prefer just driving through their occasionally as an otr driver then to take up residence there in the winter. I guess if you are used to N.D. in the winter it wouldn't be so bad.

Hey Eastcoast, how's NH? One of my favorite places to go is Rye Beach! Was actually born up there in Concord. New Hampshire is a beautiful place!

Central Ref goes through NH a lot. I remember doing flowers, Lobsters, fish, and the big one, Xmas trees! Wicked good, huh!
