If it's an ISX, 2009-2010. I can almost guarantee you it's the EGR cooler starting to fail. Shops are clueless to finding the problem and many will tell you nothing is wrong. Doh! It will leak slowly for about a month or two and gradually get worse, then total failure and the cylinders flood. I know several that had that problem, yet there was no recall.

One clue is you'll randomly throw a white vapor cloud of smoke every now and then going down the highway. It might happen over the course of 4 hours and then nothing for two weeks. Then it happens again.

850.00 labor for a C13 head gasket isn't too bad especially since it is about a 14 hour job. I used to do it quicker. Those engines were noted for head gasket problems and were more known for leaking back by number 6 cylinder. They had a head bolt torque retention problem. When they have the head off have them change the injector tube o-rings also as this can be a cause of coolant loss in the future.

As was suggested the rad cap, it is the cheapest thing on the engine and is easy to change. Many an engine has been torn apart, and nothing found, miraculously the cap is changed.
When you get the bill check to see if they changed the cap.

You need to get the engine fan fixed. Running it too cool is just as bad as running one too hot.

I would guess you will be charged about 350-400.00 for the gasket set and another 250.00 to have the head decked. 1977.00 is a good price as long as it runs good afterwards.

I got a shop I use sometimes in Lebanon, TN off I-40. Very professional$75.00 an hour. They can fix your engine fan issue if you can swing by there on a trip. It'll take a half a day maybe all day to troubleshoot then fix. They won't screw you on labor. PM me.
