im kind of in a hard spot right now , not to go into to much detail but i dont have any recent verifiable experience {10yr cdl holder, used to hual construction equipment and wide loads}, however im buying a truck but not going to put it to work doing what i want till next april , so im trying to find something else to put the truck im buying to work till april. in the search of trying to lease onto someone local i still need the experience ..... however i talked to JBH {i know its atleast something} but they said if i have my own authority and insurance they can broker me loads even if i dont have the verifiable experience .
getting my own authority and insurance doesnt scare me or the wife {we do know the numbers} but the fact that i dont have the verifiable recent experience does scare me in trying to secure loads... JBH says they will work me , but are load boards the same way in trying to get work, or maybe there is a better broker out there that will allow this ?
so whats the thoughts ? according to the wife she broke down everything says we need to make atleast 1.70 a mile to make it
should i hold off and let the truck sit till april rolls around or give it a shot ?
thanks in advance
am i doomed ? getting own authority

Do you have a reefer?
-
The only thing worse than parking your truck 'till April is losing money per mile 'till April. If $1.70 is your break even point, you need more than that for a profit. If you actually can make a profit and not lose money from now until April, keep doing what you're doing, as long as you can keep doing it.
Just don't fall into a deficit, you'll be working hard at a loss, a double negative.old1959 Thanks this. -
i do not have a reefer , actually no trailer . the company i want to lease onto in april maybe sooner if i cant make numbers work will let me lease a trailer from them .
insurance is no problem , progressive will insure me 11k a yr , i have to talk to the broker who does my current business insurance {metal fab} im sure he can wheel and deal for me since he deals with alot of insurance companys so im pretty sure ill be good on the insurance part, had my cdl for 10 yrs , clean record , etc so shouldnt be to much trouble .
dave , i hear ya on the deficit , been in and out of it all this year with my current business we do good but i think its alot more unpredictable than moving frieght ,doing the metal fab im doing now i could be able to pay the truck payment and atleast the insurance im required to have and not worry if the truck even moved .... but i like to make money so im looking at trying to atleast run local till then or even just the east coast. luckly i have a decent ## in the bank and able to take alittle risk with trying to run local . -
am i doomed ? getting own authority YEP!

Doesn't sound to me like you're doomed. You have some options regardless of your experience level.
From what I've seen (and done) if you have a trailer you are much better off. I do hot shot work but have friends with big trucks and we deal with some of the same customers.
They do well with a flatbed trailer. Figure out what local manufacturing is going on in your area and talk to them, see if they ship direct or use a broker. Get the trailer type you need if you can swing it to move the local freight.
If you can make contacts that way, they will want verification of your authority and insurance, and tax info, but you can book decent paying loads and my customers never ask me about experience. I just get the loads I can and work hard to get every load where it's going on time.
If you can't do a trailer now, look at smaller trucking companies and see if you can lease on with them. But you probably won't need your authority to do that, and might want to put it on inactive status until you start hauling your own loads. (A lot of the little companies will lease you on to run under their authority as most don't get broker authority. They'll charge you for insurance and trailer leasing if you go that route, and you'll need to put their info on your truck) but you'll still need bobtail insurance on your own. That might be a good route for you as your insurance quote sounds pretty high. Mine is less than half of what you got quoted...
It's best if you get your own apportioned tags though so if it goes bad or they don't have enough freight you can get your own authority reactivated and start getting your own loads, or go to a different company to lease.
These are just a few thoughts, hope they help you.bullhaulerswife and old1959 Thank this. -
smb , hot shotting is what i actually looked into 1st , i have a 2500 {i know a 1 ton is what i really need} and i had a 25ft gooseneck {just sold it}, then all the looking at maybe trying to do the hotshot deal and talking to a guy in the oil fields i went with a tractor becuase it made more sense to just have a truck to do basically whatever even tho guys say there is more money in hotshotting .
there relly isnt much local going on except intermodals , im just north of harrisburg and there are several companys looking for OO but its that #### experience im still on the hunt to stir up something local but looking at all my options till next april . -
I hear ya. Hope you find something that will work for you!
